When you are living in Israel, you can buy sugar-free gefillte fish, I know that Shefa holds it, because that is where we buy it. I don't know about the American market.

I don't want to use splenda (i'm not convinced it's so healthy esp. in large doses).

What's the make of the sugar free fish rivkas?

Meanwhile, i have a packet of frozen ground carp, what should i do with it?

I get the sugar free loaves when preg cause of the gestational diabetes. A few things I do with it-

bake it like reg- just throw it in the oven without the wrapper and let it bake until it has a nice crust. I serve with different dipping sauces. One that I made up (zechug and mayo) and two I got from somewhere else (lemon juice/dill/mayo and ketchup/mayo).

Bake it with tomato sauce and sauteed onions. Or you can boil it and than throw that on top.

Or my all time fav- cut it in individual pieces and coat it with corn flakes/ paprica/ garlic powder/ pepper. Than either fry or bake it (bake it covered!!!).

hth!

for gefilta besides splenda I can't think of any. I use applesauce sometimes as a sub but that wouldn't work.

if you're worried about chemicals and other things, splenda is actually safer than aspartame / nutrasweet. splenda is sugar that is processed by the body in such a way that the body doesn't recognize it as sugar. i think splenda is even made from sugar. splenda is the ONLY non-sugar that doesn't give me migraines.
i made gefilte fish from scratch once, don't remember what i put in it, i think it was like meatballs only fish and without tomato sauce. maybe google gefilte fish recipe?

the preliminary testing on splenda doesn't look so great :(

I ended up using my fish patties recipe,

I made one lot where I substituted the minced carp for the tuna, and one lot with canned salmon, I then layered the salmon mixture on the carp mixture, rolled it up and baked it in oven for an hour.

I just got text message from dh saying it was delicious :) ha! better not tell him that there is no sugar in it...

I once was discussing Splenda with a microbiologist who used to go to my shul (until she moved cross-country for her PostDoc). She said that the reason the body doesn't recognize Splenda as sugar is that they bond chlorine to the sugar and the body doesn't digest/retain it.

Since then, I dont use Splenda at all and DH cut back what he was using drastically.
