Why do all other kids hold hands in the street; but my little darling REFUSES?

He simply screams and refuses to give me his hand when we need to cross the street.
All other toddlers I see walk so nicely, and even hold hands on the sidewalk.
When we get to a street, I ask for his hand, and he says NO NO NO and presses his arms to his body.
If I offer him to sit in his carriage, he refuses even harder.
So I just take his hand and literally drag a screaming child across the street.

The worst part is, when we get to the other side and I let go, he smiles this victorious smile at me as if he won this round. I explain that we're across the street now, so we don't have to hold hands. That I didn't let him go bec. he screamed.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

He used to be good about it. In the summer, he knew very strictly not to go into the street alone, and he scolded the pigeons for not holding my hand and walking in the street! But now starts THE REBELLION!!

Will he go into the street alone? If not, though I guess if you live in a big city you can't do this, I'd leave him on one side of the street and start crossing without him! If he's disciplined enough not to go in the street alone, he'll start screaming, and when you come back, he'll hold your hand!

I used to use a harness, which is similar to a leash. who cared what it looked like-- safety came first.

No, he has no qualms about walking into the street alone. He wouldn't do it by himself, but he would definately walk behind me.

And I am considering a harness. I have one, but can't imagine my son tolerating it.

just be firm. YOU CAN'T GO INTO THE STREET W/O HOLDING HANDS!!! and just stand at the side and don't move, just look at him. that's how i did it, and now dd always knows that she has to hold hands. if we're on a walk and she's ahead of me, i do sometimes have to yell ahead at her to stop b/c she's approaching a street, but she always listens (B"H!!)!

I heard a woman here decided this is one of those things she is going to make into a big deal. So everytime her son went near the street she would jump up and down and scream. It took only a few days and he was totally trained! This kid is prob. the most cautious kid when it comes to the street that I have EVER seen. He even trained his younger siblings!

It is a phase, I had exactly the same thing between 18 months and 2 yrs. My son refused to hold my hand, I would end up dragging him along while he was screaming!!! I tried a harness but he HATED it, so I gave up. Used to take the stroller and told him that if he wouldn't hold my hand he would have to go in the stroller which he hated coz he wanted to walk. Didn't really solve the problem of trying to get him to shul on Shabbat without harness, stroller or eruv. I used to dread having to go out walking with him on Shabbat because of it. Now he is a bit better, I guess he has grown up a bit and he will usually walk quite nicely if he isn't too tired.
It will pass!!!!!!

I left out one detail- if there are rides across the street, he will stretch out his hand on his own and hold nicely, anticipating the rides.

Go figure! Toddlers.
