My oldest daughter will be turning 15 in August and as yet shows no signs of hitting puberty. Her body hasn't shown any outward signs of changing nor has she gotten her period.

I'm not scared, but I am concerned. As someone who is dealing with PCOS, I've become very in touch with body cycles, hormones and being anovulatory. I'm not sure if PCOS is hereditary but personally I'd like her to see a dr. sooner, rather than later.

I live in Israel, and the health insurance I use is Maccabi. Through their main Jerusalem clinic, they offer a women's clinic for young teenage girls. D1 has an appointment with the GYN there on April 5th.

I can't remember how old I was when I first got my period... I was either almost 14 or almost 15, and I have PCOS... although I was able to get pregnant rather easily the first two times.

Ok, I'm starting to ramble... need to get dressed as it is almost 1:30 p.m....

If she has no signs of puberty, PCOS wouldn't be my first thought. She has *no* signs at all? No bodily changes? Pubic hair? Any signs of breast development?

She could be a late bloomer, I believe up to age 16 or so is still considered normal for starting a period, but I would expect to see some other signs of puberty before that.

No outward signs... she occassionaly has a light breakout of a pimple or two and has the PCOS 'paunch'.

And she SO can't wait... poor girl doesn't know what she's mising :)

I figure it won't hurt (well, not TOO much) to have preliminary blood tests done and start getting her diagnosed.

Part of why I'd like it sooner rather than later is my own tendency to ignore my own health issues for longer than advisable. I felt I had wasted too much time in getting my PCOS diagnosed, ignoring the symptoms and such.

Yes, guilt transferance... I'm a Jewish mother, I can't help it :)

I know women in my family bloom late but its like over night. Women in my family in general don't get periods or anything until like 15. When I got my period at 13 my mom was in shock! I think Chavamom is right in the sense that its normal up until age 16. Also is she into sports? Super skinny? I have a friend who was skinny and very athletic and didn't hit until 16 and still only gets a period once a year. Its cause her body fat percentage is to small and under a certain amount it stops your body from working properly. Look at the gymnists that compete internationally. They look like little girls.

Nope, D1 is not particularly athletic and her step mother has her on a diet so skinny is not a factor in her body type.

Again, I'm not in panic mode, but I'd like to get things started at least...

I told her that I wanted to take her to a 'women's' dr. and she's ok with it. Of course I didn't express my concerns as to WHY I want to take her.

Is she concerned about why it hasn't happened yet?

One other question, is she short? How tall is she compared to you and her dad's family? Hopefully everything will turn out to be normal, but it is unusual for a girl to reach the age of 15 without development of any secondary sexual characteristics and it may indicate a problem. It is much more comon for boys to have delayed puberty than girls.

I'm 5.2 her dad is 5.5 - 5.6... his mother and maternal grandmother are VERY short, as was my paternal granmother. I would put D1 at 4.9 or so.
