I found this article on Aish.com. I thought it was a good way to not forget anything and it has some good tips.

the trouble is that most of the ppl who write this type of article have never actually done the jobs they describe.

Have you ever read Popular Mechanics? The "easy" projects with step-by-step instructions like "remove old tub caulking with a putty knife." Simple, right? Should take 15-20 seconds, tops, right? Yeah, right. 30 minutes later, the caulking is in tatters but grimly clinging to the tub like a drowning man to a life preserver, and you are frantically trying to stanch the bleeding of the finger you accidentally lacerated with the steak knife that you grabbed in desperation when the putty knife didn't do the trick.

Same thing with these articles:
"thoroughly scour oven, then apply caustic oven cleaner according to manufacturer's instructions. repeat. any stains remaining can be disregarded." Uh huh. And this is supposed to take how long? (Hint: if you were doing this for a living they'd have to pay you overtime--to say nothing of hazardous duty pay.)
