I think this year I'll do the corrigated plastic and some extra thick table cloth covering. I would think using double face tape would work in order to keep it down.

My hope is to eventually get stainless steel countertops and sinks.

When my parents moved to their current apartment (actually, they did this in each apartment they lived in) my father measured the counters exactly, went to the tinsmith and had him make counter-covers to measure, with backsplash and all, including seperate sink inserts. It wasn't cheap the first year, but they are still using them 18 years later. They slap a sheet of corrugated cardboard on the counters (my father used to be in the business, and the cardboard is also around 17-18 years old) and then slide the covers onto the counters - it takes about two minutes, they don't have to worry about aluminum foil tearing, scotch tape coming off, plastic falling down or melting from hot pots or anything, the counters look clean, it's a pleasure.

We have linoleum cut to an exact fit to cover the counters and walls up to the wall cabinets. After Pesach we roll it up and throw it in the Pesach cupboard. We've had it at least 5 years.

My parents did the same thing. It pays if you are living in your own house to have "custom" made countertops to use year after year. But we live in an apartment and are planning on using a thick plastic from the hardware store.( not exactly sure what..it's my dh's department)

I'm like Chava'sMom - we cover with the sticky backed shelf liner. Or actually, that's my husband's job. I clean the counters, he covers them. (It's the engineer in him, I don't do it efficiently enough or something!)

:ha We have to cover every bit of counter with a very precise amount of overlap - not too much or it's wasteful, of course, and the corners are a thing of joy to behold!

He also packs up the boxes when Pesach is over. We have to take pictures of the layout before removing anything each year so it can be put back, just so!

Hey, if it makes him happy, I'll survive!

Oh yeah! G-d forbid I overlap. Oh man! LOL!! It has to be precise and it has to be the most rational way. He is a systems engineer so everything has to be the most efficeint and rational.

a question for the lenoleum users:

whenever i see people using this, it seems to be curled up at the edges, due to the rolling of the lenoleum thru the year. how does one avoid the curl when covering the counters? does it make it curl less if you have a more exact fit? or do you have to put rocks on it? super duper mailing tape? or what?

strong tape does the trick.
Never had a problem with it.
Used masking tape all these years.
The only pain is taping it, as you need 2 ppl - 1 to hold it down and other one to tape.
