He also might be buisy working on his physical skills.

Yes, that is it. He is much more interested in developing his physical skills, i think i wrote this ^ he's doesn't appear to be interested in language much, especially not repeating words. Whereas his physical skills are all very good, b'h. Also his dad didn't start speaking until two and a half... so i'm not really worried but on the other hand i would like to do what i can to encourage speech.

that makes a lot of sense - my first didn't walk until 15 months altho he was cruising forever and my ped was less concerned b/c he was very advanced verbally. b4 when i asked about comprehension, in a discussion w/ my ped he said that the understanding is more important than the number of words they say. also at your ds's age, they should only be able to understand one step commands.

just a cute little story since we're on the topic. This morning I was drinking my coffee in a dog-shaped mug. My ds came over pointed to the mug and said 'woo'! (first time he said that)

Yes, my son worked on fine motor skills very intensely, speech 2nd and gross motor skills last. He was able to press buttons on toys consciously and carefully by 7 months and to flip pages of books, build legos, etc.
Speaking, he was average, but he didn't walk until 14 1/2 months. He's also just starting to climb now, and he's 21 months. Another kid I know his age was climbing out of her playpen by a year! But he just learned to climb onto the table, onto my bed, INTO his crib...

So all kids develop at their own pace, but you're right to look forways to encourage him.

My son is 19 months and has 4 words, which he hardly uses. He mainly communicates through grunting, pointing and shouting. He is very good at communicating this way.

My son is 14 years old. He does the same thing... <_<
He once had a vocabulary of thousands of words before he started Yeshiva Gedola. It must still be in there somewhere. Hopefully it will re-emerge by the time he starts looking for a shidduch...
