We usually go LATE- last year it was just us so we finished early. I think we were done by 2ish. The year before we made it to sunrise. This year since I don't sleep anyway dh told me he would try to aim at all night (don't worry lauren- you guys will not be held captive! LOL). We give over sichas, discuss customs, ask questions and try to find answers. |

Let's see.. normally we start sedars around 6 and end at about.... 7. Dh's family seems to get extra hungry on Pesach and can't do a sedar. My family does more and can go an extra hour, but the guests complain about being hungry. I would adore going to a "real" sedar. Last year we didn't have any sedars because my MIL was in a major car accident beginning of April. I did host all of her guests at my house because they all live 2-3 hours away and all came to see her in rehab (she was in hospitals and rehab for all of April). So.. we ate Pesach food, but everyone rushed to go see her before and after. But, in general, no discussing anything.. and if a topic comes up it's usually, "didn't we review that last year?!!" SO.. we read in English so everyone will understand (my family can do Hebrew, dh's can't) and it's a race. Also, we each take a paragraph and read but some people don't feel like reading, and we also don't go back to the sedar after the meal. It never feels complete (because it isn't) but it's how everyone likes it. (except me...) Anyone have any suggestions of easy discussion topics to ease my entire family into it? Also, my mom hates it when people debate or if anyone gets into a heated discussion. We are all pretty egalitarian (democrats), but my brother is traditional and republican and it seems that he gets "ganged up on" which is why mom hates discussions that can make him feel isolated. Suggestions? Barbie |

your more than welcome to come to us
:) Second night we are having lauren (abby and maddy's eema) and her family. Hopefully if I can convince sauls_mom too! Waiting to hear about a family from dh's work. Basically kids will be taking over the beds and couchs (and cribs and pack-n-plays), food flowing and discussion too. One thing we did two years ago cause people got hungry was hurry through and than once fish was over brought out the hagadahs again to have real discussions. Over the meal we were able to discuss more and people were happier cause they weren't so hungry. Thats the plan for this year too. I learned at machon chana (BT sem in crown heights) that its a Lub. custom to make the seder go as long as you can and bentch right around sunrise. I once went to a sader that was amazing. We litterally had to stop and bentch cause we noticed the sun was rising! I have never learned so much. They kept the food flowing, the wine flowing (I think there were 12 of us and they went through more than 12 bottles!), and the discussion good! Don't know if anyone really keeps this custom or if others do this as well. |

I'd love to go but don't think I can travel far in my 3rd trimester.. can't even go 20 minutes without a bathroom break! No one at our sedars even gets up to wash hands... they pretend. I guess we all do whatever we are comfortable with. I'd love to just experience a lengthy one once. I did go to a friends house on time but well after our sedar was over, I forget why... and theirs was still going. I sat for a while to listen and loved it, but that wasn't why we were there (again, no idea why!!) but I remember wishing ours was more like that. I remembered some of the ideas they discussed and at our next sedar I brought them up. People thought they were interesting, but everyone looked at their watches and tried to hurry. After all.. everyone has to work the next day. Oh well. Barbie |

something I grew up with was a game my uncle invented. Stump uncle O. We would all be very serious before pesach and try to find questions to stump him. I actually email my parents before yom tov questions for him. I finally got him!! It was a fun competition to see who could actually stump him! The guy from dh's work usually goes to his family and than comes to us. We are just starting cause we don't start until after maariv. |

 what about the halacha of eating afikoman by halachic midnight? I know many ppl stay after the meal is over and keep on going... Barbie, there is a book that might help you: http://www.hebrewworld.com/books/Passover.html and http://www.hebrewworld.com/books/FamilyHaggadah.html You can also serve first course, make it 'heavy' as soon as everybody gets in and after that go through Hagada, with some snacks available on the table. Hope it works out better this year! |

whoever has them, I'll apreciate, as I'm really curious. Not that we're going to change, but I'd like to hear. Oh, just want 2 note that it isa mitzvah to discuss the redemption untill one falls asleep. We're talking here about the halacha of eating afikoman b4 the halahik midnight. |
