My inlaws have refurbished dh's old tricycle for Channah. It is in beautiful condition and is a nice, red metal trycicle (the old style ones that a lot of us probably had). Here it is the law that al kids on bikes must wear helmets. So what do you think. Do I need to get her a helmet for on her tricycle this summer? I suspect that legally I am "exempt" but should I do it just to get her used to wearing a helmet when she is on a bike? |

My kids ride their "trikes" on the back wooden deck and i don't have helmets... maybe if i took them on the street. is it really a law about helmets? so many kids here don't wear 'em and it scares me. then there are the ones who wear black hats as helmets... |

Realez - yes it is the law. Unfortunatly in our neighbourhoods people do not tend to follow traffic laws and the such. I think I will get her a helmet. That was sort of my first instinct but I just wanted to know what other people thought. |

I would get a helmet for a tricycle, for sure. but let me add my own question: Is it too odd to get one for a ride-on toy? It has 4 wheels and no pedals. Zusha uses it at home and doesn't fall off. I am planning to let him ride it outside in the summer. He's too young for a trike. Is it strange to have a helmet for this? BTW, no one here wears helmets either. I think it's sick. It is SOOO important! |

We have the kids wear helmets right from the get-go and that way it's not odd to suddenly start using one when the training wheels come off. Hmm...regarding the push bike with no pedals. I'd say it depends on how fast your lil' guy can go! Asher just plotzes along and really doesn't get much air LOL However, on the three wheeled stand up scooter - yes, absolutely because he can really move on that thing. |

Get the helmet. In most states, trikes intended for use on a sidewalk by persons under the age of 6 are exempt, but you may as well get her used to a helmet now. karapooz, i do not think it's nutty to use a helmet on a ride-on toy. the sooner children get used to a helmet the more likely they are to use it later on. |

I agree that the earlier you start with the helmet, the better- even just for Chinuch purposes. We just bought Amira (my 4.5 year old) her first real bike! (with training wheels) I am so excited to see her riding it- it is so cute! |
