i wasnt successful in nursing my 1st but bh it's working ok for my second..is it normal though to nurse every hour?? i feel like he is on me the whole day!!

secondly i know this may be tmi..but i went to a breastfeeeding clinic whichh is heping me with correct latch on. it is difficult at times and it takes alot of patience. one thing they noticed is that after a feeding my nipples were "lipsticked" menaing the whole aeroela wasnt in his mouth. it isnt that painful and i know he is getting as his diapers are full. as he is hungry and finally latched on "his way" i let it go but notice the "lipsticked nipples" should i drive myself crazy over it?

Every hour with a newborn is very common. Does he have periods where he sleeps for a bit?

I was told 'at least an inch' of the areola should be in their mouth. Think about it. Women have nipples that come in all shapes and sizes. To expect all babies to get ALL the areola in their mouth isn't realistic. If you are not sore, he is having poopy diaper, he's gaining weight - don't make yourself crazy!

Mazel Tov! Yeah, at first they eat often. Sounds like you are doing a great job. He will calm down over time and you will see as he gets older and his tummy gets bigger he will take in more and hence nurse not as often.

My kids never took in the whole of it cause honestly it was to much. I never even gave it a tought cause nursing didn't hurt and their diapers were plenty wet. The LC I saw told me to get as much in as I could. Do you remember art and emily from when you were here? She is a great LC. I can ask her if I can pass you her email and maybe she can give you some advice if you want.

i've noticed myself being "lipsticked" but everything was in my baby's mouth. glad i only heard of this by #3 so i didn't make myself nuts over it.
as long as you and baby are happy and baby is gaining weight & having diapers then nothing else matters!

sounds like you are doing a WONDERFUL job. i am so glad its going easier for you this time. Something that really helped me when I had Zu and just trying to nurse was our ped told me not to watch the clock. Instead to follow the little one's cues. They know what they want :)

realgood- I have the same situation- 'lipsticked.'
But after all I have endured so far- improper latch + very sore nipples + thrush, etc... I am just happy that it's not mind- numbingly painful anymore. I don't care abt. this minor detail.

LOL... karapooz you just reminded me of the toe curling sessions. Oh man am I going to have fun the next couple of weeks IY"H!!! I just make sure I take my pain killers about half an hour before baby needs to nurse. Only way I get through it. So far I am two for two on getting thrush right away. I might just ask my ob to give me meds as I leave the hospital this time!

a friend suggested I 'extend' the latch mannually -
basically just take baby's lips and pull it a bit to cover more of the nipple.
Sometimes it worked, and sometimes ds was very unhappy about it. Eventually, he figured out how to do it himslef.

They're very smart, these little kiddies! :()

Probably b/c of the IV antibiotics they give you for surgery. Have you tried taking probiotics (acidopholus and others) once you can start eating in the hospital? Might be worth a try.

yep, yep, yep.

I even ate yogurt like it was going out of style, was super careful with tev, etc... My ob absolutely feels it was cause of the antibiotics. With Tev it is no question cause I had to also go on antibiotics the monday after I left the hospital (I went home erev shabbos) cause I got a tiny infection in my incision. This time Thank G-d I know how to avoid the issue that caused that (I leaked so much while sleeping I would wake up in a soaking wet bed and my incision was constantly wet and never dry the whole weekend) with a few simple tricks! Also now I know some extra tips on trying to avoid the thrush.

I don't know exactly what 'lipsticked' means either.

However, the issues with improper latch are usually not a problem for the baby (meaning, a baby can nurse and get milk with a bad latch) but for mom (it hurts and won't get better). So my vote for working on the latch. I did this with my DS when he was a few weeks old, I would delatch and relatch him over and over (yes, it's sometimes annoying) to make sure it was the most comfortable for me.
After a bit, he learned and the discomfort disapeared.

Good luck and enjoy him.

And yes, it can be normal for him to nurse frequently.

If you find that he is using you as a human pacifier, not for nourishment, he may have a strong sucking need and a pacifier may be useful. However, wait until the baby is at least a month, when your nursing (and his latch) are more established.

again for every bad story of using a pacifier earlier there is a good one. With Zu I would not have survived without one when I finally gave into it. That kid wanted to be on me non-stop. He still has a very strong sucking need!

I wish my Yaakov would take a pacifier. I think it would help him be able to self soothe a bit. As of now I am the pacifier. It sounds like you are doing a great job!!! I found that as my kids got a little older, it was easier to help them with a better latch b/c their mouths were bigger so they could get more in.
