Whenever my almost 8 month old has enough of playing on the floor and wants me to pick her up she will clap her hands!
Isn't that a riot? Don't know where she got that from!

How funny! Zusha did that when he learned to sit up by himself. Every time he got into a sitting position alone, he'd clap.

Kids do make their own sequences of events in their minds and can create "signs"

Many children do develop this.

This can be useful for communication between parent and child.

However, it's not ASL (American Sign Language), which is a form of communication that is understood by more people than just baby and parents.

My perspective is that if you're going to actively teach your baby signs, you may as well learn ASL (or modified ASL) as it's more universally recognized and can be used later on too. However, there's nothing wrong with your child making up signs on their own either.

i know it's not asl. just wondering if this is the concept of baby signing or just a cute thing ;)

if i were to do the sign thing, i'd do ASL but i don't think i plan to do it at all.

did u clap when your baby was learning how to sit up?
When dd aquired new skills she would often applaud to herself, b/c we gave her lots of encouragement when she was learning.

It is very funny, thoug!! :ha

FG, it would make sense like that, but no, I didn't clap!
I started later on- clapping and cheering accomplishments, which he also picked up fast.

realeez, signs made up by babies are really the best, bec you don't need to teach and they have some association, instead of tryng to learn from nothing.

ASL actually is not just random signs to learn/teach. A lot of the signs are very logical and make sense.

Here's some examples:

"Eat" or "food" - you put your fingers toward your mouth, like you would when you eat

"drink" - you tip your thumb back against your chin, looks like you're tipping a cup into your mouth

"Banana" - you put your index finger up and "peel" it like you would a banana

"All Done" or "Finished" - you brush your fingers away from in front of you, like you would push stuff away from you when you're done with it.

These are just some examples. Not all the signs are logical to the average observer, but they make sense when you start to use them.
