Just wondering, if a baby cannot have milk formula or soy formula, or alimentum, what's next? My friend has been nursing and supplementing because she has to stop nursing soon. She doesn't want to do ED or TED, and the kid is allergic to everything and nurses for hours on end.

That is the same thing as Alimentum. What is ED or TED? How old is the baby?

ED is Elimination Diet and TED is total elimination diet.

It is when the mother cuts major allergens out of her diet and even many regular foods to see what sets off her baby.

there are a couple. Our ped allergist usually puts the child on neocate.

if he is so allergic, how is it that she has not yet done ED? isn't that the first thing they try?

She was on Ed and then Ted during her pregnancy and she wants her life and diet back. She can nurse the baby (1 month) for over an hour, and then give him a 2 oz bottle after. Then he eats an hour later. She's exhausted and is ready to put him on formula only. Neutragemin (sp) and alimentum or the same. Last night she gave him the ready made alimentum instead of the powder and he seemed to be better. Her other child could only have powder forms, not ready made...

What is neocate? Who makes it?

I think neocate is RX only?

I've heard that is common. My friend's dd was having issues w/ formula and as per my suggestion, she tried ready made instead of powder and it really made all the difference!

Neocate is indicated when the baby needs an elemental diet, it is a formula that does not need to be broken down in the gut and contains all the nutrients needed in their simplest forms ie amino acids (rather than protein), simple carbs, fat, vitamins minerals etc
Used for whole protein intolerance, severe malabsorption when nothing else is suitable. VERY VERY expensive, tastes and smells absolutely foul. Here in the UK it is manufactured by SHS International in Liverpool.

thanks for all the info. I passed it on to my friend who will be using the pre made alimentum instead of powder and she'll see how it goes. She is going to talk to the dr about neocate if it's necessary, but she says thanks, and is so greatful for all the info!

Just a P.S., It is not so unusual for a 1 month old to have hour long feedings. I had that with two of my children, it is exausting, but not abnormal, if it was a 3 month old still doing that it would be something to worry about.

She's just done. The kid is way over 10 lbs (so he getting nutrition...) but she's frustrated. She just wants him to feel good and she doesn't want to BF anymore.

there is no law that commands anyone to do more than they can! if she cannot do it, she shouldn't, ones mental health is very important in these matters!

Okay, Here's my biased opinion:

Such a pity that she does not have the support and encouragement to breastfeed. If she could meet other women who have been through this, and can commiserate and reassure her that it's very common, it could help a lot.

Has she contacted her local La Leche League Chapter? They have a lot of information and support to help a breastfeeding mom.

Although an elimination diet sounds hard, it actually doesn't last as long as you think. Many babies have intollerances early on, and as they grow, the allergies tend to disapear. So an ED may not be so bad, as it may last only a couple of weeks. (not to mention the health benefits it can provide for yourself).

-Sounding off...
