Ouch. My 10 month old (who has K"H a mouth full of teeth already) has started biting me- hard, when he finishes nursing. He is not doing it to be mean, of course, and sometimes it is when he is asleep, but yikes it is painful. I usually (if he is awake) say NO loudly, and stop nursing, which makes him cry :-( but hasn't detered him at all. Any suggestions? This is actually what made my daughter stop nursing- she bit me when she was 10 1/2 months, I said NO loudly and put her down and she never bit me again. She also never nursed again, and I do not want that happening here.... |

Hmmm....my daughter used to do that (14 months now) when she would teeth. I would do the same thing and she would LAUGH!! She outgrew it eventually. I also know what you mean about doing it in their sleep as well. I would just try to unlatch as quickly as possible. Funny story though: Yesterday it was nearing naptime and Aviva was eating some zucchini. She wanted to nurse so I was letting her but she kept biting. She hasn't done it for months so I finally sat her up and it turned out she had a piece of zucchini in her mouth! She was trying to nurse and chew at the same time!! I finally got her to spit the piece out. :rofl Lisa |

Yeah, biting stinks. Especially when they fall asleep and "bite down" - when this happens, I immediately delatch the baby, and if he wakes up, let him latch on again, but this time properly. Because this tends to happen in sleep, I try to delatch him as soon as he is asleep...which sometimes backfires on me, because he's not always completely asleep and cries because it woke him up...and back to the breast he goes! |

It depends on when they bite. Tev also bite only when he fell asleep and I would just make a point of taking him off right as he was about to doze. Zu on the other hand just like to naw. I was told two meathods by a LC. 1- in a loud voice sternly say NO and detach. Feeding time is over if they do it again. 2- smoosh them into the breast and they will have to let go cause they can't breath. I will not try 2 personally but I know people it worked for. I did number 2 with Zu and it took 2 times and he never did it again! |

Yeah, Zusha got teeth before he turned 4 months, so I feel your pain! He enjoyed a good bite now and then, but when he saw I reacted strongly, he'd stop. In the beginning he did it involunterely, but then I had to train him. A few times I pinched his nose and then I just stopped nursing when he bit. Physiologically, he can't bite while he's sucking, cuz his tongue is between teeth and nipple. So when he decides to have fun, mealtime is usually over anyhow. |
