I am making a b-day party 4 dd in school. Her teacher told me that there is a diabetic kid in her class (was diagnosed a month or so ago) and that the kid gets his own desert and the mother comes to administer insulin to him so that he can have it.

I feel very very bad for the kid and am looking for ideas of all protein or almost all protein deserts so that he can participate in fun.

So far I came up w/ idea of marangs (sp?) - they're made w/ egg whites and sugar. What do u reccomend I sub. sugar with?

Any other ideas are very very welcome! :please

I was going to say the same thing. Call the mom and tell her you would like to make something that includes her daughter and what kinds of snacks are okay for her.

I don't know who the mother is. Looks like they want to keep it privite.

Also, the mother herself seems to have been brainwashed by the doctors that insulin is THE only way to go - for parties she gets a cupcake w/ a known amnt of carbs for her kid , so that she can administrer proper amnt of insulin (not a carb-free snack).

It just occured to me - r there carb-free ices? That I can sub sugar 4 a sweetner?

Zun, what did u have 4 desert on Shabbos w/ gd?

I want to talk to this mother about diet, but first I have to be there 'accidentally' when she comes to give her son the insulin shot.

Meanhwile, you, girls, are my only hope to give this kid a great party!

I am not going to give out pekalah - we'll make 2 origami figures they will take home with them.
I used to give out helium baloons, but the store I used to get it from closed. :(

I didn't have dessert on shabbos for the most part honestly but my carb intake was MUCH less than a reg. diabetic and also less than a gd person on insulin. I wouldn't be so quick to jump on the mom about diet. You don't really know the situation. Not every form of diabetes can be controlled by diet.

I'm not jumping on her.
The teacher said something that made me suspect that this is the case.
This is why I want to talk to her.

Meanwhile, I'm still looking 4 desert ideas.

The teacher might not know whats really going on. I also would think insulin is MUCH easier with kids than diet. Their diet still must be controlled but can you imagine a kid being on a totally controlled diabetic diet? It would be hard. I know when people come to me about Tev and my choices when it comes to his allergies they come with good intentions to share their own knowledge but its frustrating. Just because I didn't make the choice they would have doesn't mean I didn't make a good choice for my kid. It might seem to some that I am being pushed by docs because of how I chose to go... but in actuality I am not.

this is why I said:

"It seems"

and

"I get an impression."

If I can help her - why not try? I am not planning to tell her what to do, I'll offer some knowledge I have. It will be up to her to take me up on the offer or not. I'm not giong to push.

I actually cannot even begin to imagine what they will do when the kid goes to school.

In any case, right now I'm looking for a way to make a b-day party the boy can enjoy, not watch while eating (again!) his green cup cake from a health food store.

this sounds really weird to me. a 4 year old's mother comes in every day to administer insulin and you don't know which kid it is? dd never said anything? your daughter must know. i teach 43 4 year olds, and the kids are the biggest blabbermouths ever. i have kids tell me about father's snoring, mothers who can't make lunches in the morning cuz they're throwing up, how old everyone is in their families, parents who don't wear seatbelts, and other crazy things. i can only imagine what kids say at home! dd never says "X's mommy came to school..."?
now on to the food part ...
what about sugar free jello? you can make it in different layers of colors. iirc, it's basically calorie free. if you want, you can ask the teacher to ask the mother to "reserve" some carbs for the party. just be aware that some sweeteners that bakeries use can SERIOUSLY upset the stomach!! maybe try to do a sugar free icecream cake or something. or instead of coming in with cake, etc can you do a lunch, like make pizza or something?

the kid was just diagnosed and teh mother only comes if there is a praty.
Actually, I accidentally found out who the kid is.

My heart goes out for him.

I want to make everything myslef, as for dd it's a part of the fun.

thanks for the jello idea - is it sold in stores (powdered) or do I need to make it from scratch?
