<<Yeah, well.. I do tend to think of long hair only being for girls. I understand the upshern thing, but after that I do like short hair on boys/men and longer hair on girls/women. >>

Same here!

so funny. i just saw a friend's ds w/ pigtail this shabbos and he looked so cute. but he is very boyish looking. i don't like the pigtails look either- i rarely do that for my dd.
how about a half-pony on top and then a full pony on bottom?

I did taht til i realized his hair goes into one pony, so he wears one high pony and it makes him look much more boyish than if he wore his curls cascading down, though that is my favorite look. he gets a pony in the extreme heat or if his curls are really messy and i dont have time to let the no more tangles dry cuz otherwise it clumps up.

his hair isn't long enough for that. When it grows out a bit I will do that and much more!! (Poor kid!)

My parents are not chasidish, but htey did an upsherin. DH absolutely refuses to even think about an upsherin. Though, with Ru, I got him longer hair cuts until he was 3. It was hard to part with his curls :). Simcha's hair is goign to be even harder to cut. It's fianlly growing in , and he has htese georgeous white blond curls! Can't even imagine thinking about taking a scissor to them. We'll see how long it gets before I agree to cut it.

we are not chasidish and its not our minhag to wait, but we are waiting because our rav said its minhag yerushalayim and we should wait. so my son will have some sort of upsherin, i might cut it next lag b'omer if he will be toilet trained. he will only be 2.5

we're not chassidish either (although my fil can trace roots back to Gerrer chasidim). but we also asked a Rav who said we should do upsherin b/c it's a minhag yisroel (and no, i do not understand that reason :dontknow ), so that's the plan as of now.

i,m not chassidish, though I have a chaddish backgroung, my family did it. DH family had no minhag, MIL did for one son cuz his hair was beautiful blonde, but not for the others. My husband didnt care much either way and it made me happy so we did it! (my Hubby makes a mean ponytail!)

BTW, none of my BIL's do it. My MIL loves that we do, she loved coming to the yeshiva for the upsherin, and the haircut. She told me once she wishes e/o else would do it because its so nice!

my middle son, looked like a girl no matter what! From the day he was born, people would come over and tell me what a pretty little girl I had, even though the kid was dressed from head to toe in blue! At some point I just stopped correcting people, and would say thank you instead! there is only so many times you can correct people without going insane! Noone ever thought the other two were girls! They have very boyish looks!

sometimes peyos can look like pigtails. my mother once took my brother, brother's friend, and brother's friend's brother somewhere (this was years ago and many cities ago) and the little boy had long curled blond peyos. someone stopped to ask my mother about the "little girl with the adorable pigtails" and when my mother said that really she was a boy, the lady asked his name. his name? eli. the lady thought my mother had lost her mind!

okay, so to those who are not chassidish, but do upsherin, what kind of customs do you do?
dh and i are bt, we will be the first in our families to do upsherin iyh (it's next year, iyh, so i am very early :) ), and as dh is sephardic, we'll probably go that way, but licking honey from the aleph beis? wrapping in tallis? is that all chabad/ chasidish?
just trying to get a pic of what we could do.

We aren't chassidishe/ lubavitch - but have chassidish lineage so we do upsherin.
We had a big party where everyone who wanted to took a snip.
We would have taken ds to cheder but we didn't know if we were accepted to the school we wanted so i didn't know where to take him. i would like to take ds2 this year if possible.

Instead, we bought chocolate aleph bais letters and he sat with our Rav saying the letters (we go the letters for his name). Then the rav took the first snip. During a lull, the Rav went thru the entire aleph bais with him for a big chart we have and made the bracha on tzitzis. I figured that the main reason for the honey is to teach that the aleph bais is sweet and chocolate does the same trick! of course, he didn't eat them all that day!
