i'm with chava, it does seem like a silly thing for the price! Buy an exersauser, its almost the same price, and more entertaining.

I am a believer that if a child can't sit up by himself, leaning on a reclined seat, he has no business sitting - it can ruin his bones. Imagine being put in an unnatural position and forced to stay there.
I read a company's proud testimonial: "Our baby testers sat happily for 30 mins or more!"
I'm not exactly sure HOW happily! Poor kids.

I have never seen one in Israel. The well babies educate the mothers about the dangers of sitting a baby up before 4 months. Thats even reclining as opposed to flat.

rikal, why can't a baby be reclined and not flat before 4 months? i've never heard of such a thing! people use carseats, swings, slings, etc - when i hold my baby it isn't flat on the lap!

Most Europeans warn strongly about not even reclining a baby. I think that's a bit far.
I wouldn't use a swing on a newborn- only from 1 month old.
I don't like the idea of car seats either. I guess safety in the car overrides any risk of misformed bones. (A small risk.) If I would have a car, I'd probably look into getting a car bed. But since I use a car so rarely, and with the kids almost never, so we'll stick with the car seat.
Slings- dunno. A bjorn type carrier bothers be since the baby is straight up. A sling- I don't know. The baby is lying down...

Lap- you support the baby. Not like her whole weight is being pulled down on her spine.

When Mimi was about two months old we considered getting one. At that point she loved being sat up and I was sure she would enjoy a bumbo. It just seemed like a ridiculous price for a stupid piece of plastic. Dh and I kept discussing it until it became a non-issue.
I've never heard of the no-reclining thing. What if the baby has reflux, or a cold? Plenty of young babies spend a lot of time in their car seats, and I've never heard of that causing any damage. My own babies, even when not in the car, loved being rocked to sleep in their car seats.

my 2nd ds spit up tons (didn't bother him and he gained so wasn't officially reflux) and we were told by a dr to keep him semi-upright for 20 minutes after each feeding in a car seat or swing.

i've heard of not inclining preemies b/c of breathing issues but never heard of it w/ healthy, full term babies.

My dr. said that baby must be sleeping lying flat. If baby has reflux then you can put something under the mattress to make it recline a a little, but still baby's back would be flat against the matteress. In a car seat - back is really bent, so it's not good to sleep in that position or spend many hours like that.

Our peds have no problems with them in the carseat or swing. In reality I have no choice with the kids. Zu flipped himself out by learning how to roll at 7 weeks. He would roll on his tummy and not be able to get off and wake up screaming! Our ped recommended putting him to sleep in the swing till he learned how to roll back over cause I was getting less than 45 mins of sleep a night. With Tev they thought he was refluxing but we found out it was his allergies. Poor kid could not sleep unless he was sitting up. He litterally could not breath and a pillow was not enough of a prop for him. Both have no issues with their backs or what not. Now Freida is a whole other creature. She is also stuffed (though I think I figured which food it is out!!!) up but her thing is she wants it nice and tight around her. I have tried EVERYTHING but the only place she will sleep is the carseat. Our ped actually told us its perfectly safe and fine, just try to transition her before she is 3 months.

The carseat is stiff and supports. The prob is with hours of not having the whole body weight supported. I also had one w/reflux and he slept near my bed in his carseat because I was told to keep him upright 45 min. after nursing. the carseat was my idea because I couldn't stay awake and hold him that long.
