Whom does he hit and under what cicumstances? My son hit EVERYONE and EVERYTHING at about 20 months. At first I explained that no, we should pet the toy, book, picture of baby... He'd hit and say, NO,NO,NO! After I explained a few times that it's wrong and showed him the right way I began ignoring. He'd hit, say no, no and look at my reaction. I'd turn around so he couldn't even see my face. Then when I heard him say, "Voil, shain," (Good, nice) I knew he was petting the toy ar whatever. I'd turn to him and lavish him with praise. |

It could be from frustration from a lack of words. My overused line when teaching pre-school, "use your words, not your hands!" |

If you can try to catch him right before he hits and distract him from doing it. |

It's as karapooz says, he hits everyone and everything. He sits in his buggy when I take him for a walk, hitting everything he passes, and if he can't reach it doesn't stop him from trying. Zun, he throws things out of frustration. |

could it be from moving... frustration, not knowing the common lang, missing friends, etc...? |

I don't think so, 'coz he does it when he's happy! When he gets frustrated he flings things accross the room. |

A hitting stage is normal and doesn't come from distress or such unless its really unusually violent for the age. Hitting is experimented with and has to be taught that it is unaccaptable behaviour, like spilling chocklate on the couch and other thing we normally manage to put a stop to very quickly. If it seems to be an attention getter, ignore it as much as possible and give more positive attention at another time. Its the same shita as kids who use bathroom words. They love the attention they get when naughty. Hitting Mommy and Tatte should be reacted to w/o anger but firmness. Take his hand and firmly say "NO!" with your stern mean mommy mask on. Hitting objects should be ignored. Hitting other children who are the same age is usually handled by peer persuasion, in other words he gets it back and a pecking order settles in until they are old enough to really be reasoned with.. |

I agree with rikal. Zusha also hit when he was happy. The way he studied my face for a reaction gave him away- there is no question that he did it for attention and was looking at me intently to catch some reaction. |
