Yesterday I went to a shul BBQ at a big park and on our way back to the car, my ds wanted to stop at the bathrooms so dh went w/ and I waited with my almost 3 year old and baby. While we were waiting, this elderly couple walks over and looks at the kids. The lady loudly tells her dh that my ds is a girl and I correct her. She asks why he has long hair (he has gorgeous silky long str8 hair) and I explain that it is a religious thing to wait until he is 3 to cut it off. Usually when I say that, ppl nod respectfully and move along but this lady rolls her eyes at me and says "Okaaaaaaaaay." I figured this is not the time to explain religion or convince her of my religion but I still want to put her in her place. I looked her str8 in the eye and said "We plan to donate his hair to children with cancer." omg I got her blustering (is that a word?) an apology so fast!

So odd, cuz it's in style now for boys to have long hair! (Probably not that long, but still...)
Ppl never think Zusha's a girl cuz his hair is still so short!

By the end Zu would just smile and say thanks. When we would get in the car or home he would tell me- mommy that person is silly!

Wow! Don't ppl ask before handing food to a stranger's child?

OT, but I was in a frum store once and turned my back to the carriage to look at something. In the parent tray was a packet of REALLY hot potato chips I was eating. The saleslady decided to be 'really nice' and gave them to Zusha, who was like 14 months then. He ate them no prob, cuz he can tolerate spicy food. But what if he was like other kids and would scream? was it really up to her to give my son this?
Anyway, I saw this and quickly took it away and wiped out his mouth. Not cuz it's hot, but cuz I don't feed my son garbage. (I usually don't eat it either, but I was preg with Gedalya and he wanted some ;))

I probably would let him swallow that mouthful, since my hands were dirty and I didn't want to put them in his mouth, but I did it to leave an impression on the lady- KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY KID (and others.)

And she was shocked that I didn't feed chips to my son. In this community ppl seem to serve junk food as a first solid food to babies. I've seen 7 month olds with lollies and mothers feeding chips by hand to kids too young to hold the bag. But I digress...

A few months ago I was out for a walk with my baby, and no less than 4 ppl flet obligated to tell me that my baby was either underdressed or overdressed. The funny thing was, my mother was with me too. Fortunately, she thought it was funny. She kept saying that it was "just like Israel, where everyone feels responsible for every baby."

we get that whenever we go to your neighborhood. I can't help that my kid gets hot so easily (I must admit he gets cooler easier now that he has no hair!!). Ionce told a woman who yelled at me for not having a coat on Zu- you try getting a coat on that kid and than watching the sweat drip down his face!

Today I was in a store where there was a huge sale. (Ave J Stores has 50% off everything now.) So obviously there was a huge crowd. There was a double carriage parked at the enterance, with a shrieking baby. Mother nowhere in sight. The toddler in the other seat was trying to give the baby a paci unsuccessfully, so I couldn't hold back and helped. (After 5 minutes.) So then the lady who was picking out clothes several feet away comes and takes the baby. Apparently she was the mother. Whatever. In such cases, how can you NOT interfere?

Dh gets hot very easily and often wears short sleeves in the winter. Once a woman called me on the phone and asked me why I "let" dh walk out of the house wearing short sleeves in freezing temps. I explained to her that I dress my kids, not my husband. He is fully capable of picking out his own clothes.
