I'm not sure exactly where you read this, but since it's a nursing thread, I'll asume it's "Suplemental nutrition system" (or something like that) where the baby gets formula thru a thin tube, while sucking at the breast at the same time, for stimulation.

and if the govt felt that "breast is best", then why does wic pay for formula? why don't they only pay for it if there is a medical need for it?

There are other reasons. When I worked for CPS we had mothers who would trade their food stamps for beer. Then all of a sudden the baby is hungry. Some of them even put beer in the bottle! The ss does what it can because there are mothers like this, too. If formula is obtainable then there is a chance these babies will get fed. There are parents who are negligent or ignorant who would stick all kind of things into the bottle if someone didn't give them formula. Thats one of the reasons why noone interferes w/ the free gift advertizings in the hosp. These mothers are not going to bf, and b"H for that. Who knows what substances and diseases would be passed down.

Basically, what Carnation did, was that they marketted their formulas to new moms in third world countries. The problem was that they didn't label the packaging in the native language, etc, with instructions to boil the water (the local water supply was contaminated.

Babies died. Many.

Had these moms nursed their babies, fewer babies would have died.

Here's a link to a google search I did on this...

Yes - this is true. I have a neighbor that gets food stamps and is always trying to trade them for money (i.e. to buy other things besides foods for her kids and I don't think it's for shoes based on the amount of beer cans I see in their porch garbage.)

the supplemental nursing system.

Basicly it is a device which feeds formula through a tiny tube while the mother nurses simeltaneously. It Helps the baby learn how to suck, and rewards sucking, the harder he sucks on the breast and tube the more milk he gets, no suction no milk.

SNS is extremely time consuming! I don't know if I would do it now, its committing yourself to 4 feedings a day that take about an hour and twenty minits each. as the baby learns to suck you slowly move it down, but it is very hard either way.

I'm not surprised doctors didn't say anything about it to you. The only reason I knew to use it was because I hired a lactation consultant, she brought it with her, and helped us throough the ups and downs of it. the only thing doctors told me, was to give formula/pump and see how much milk you have (and we all know pumps are just totally accurate measures!).

Doctors are not the best sources of breastfeeing information, its not something that is taught to them. My DH, knows more about it than any doctor I have met! :ha and BTW, DH does not know very much! lol :ha

i didn't do sns for that reason - very time consuming. i had a very educated, wonderful, competent lc and she told me to use a teeny tiny syringe and to squirt it into dd's mouth as she nursed (basically the same idea). but now she's 4 1/2 months old and 12 lbs 9 ozs - realgood, :banana :banana :banana !
chavelamomela - your stories remind me of what happened when gerber started marketing in some countries where many people didn't know how to read, and relied on pictures on containers so they would know what they were getting. turns out they thought that americans were feeding their kids mashed up babies, cuz that's what's on the jars of baby food, the gerber baby.

It doesn't make sense about the Gerber- I mean, they also put the pic of the food, and any normal person would NOT think that this was carrot-flavored baby meat.

Unless they are in the habit of eating babies themselves in their culture, I doubt that they would think that others do that.
