I took Gedalya swimming today! He's 3 months old. I put him in the baby pool, which is actually quite big. It's up to Zusha's chest when he sits, and for G.A. it's up to the neck/chin. He was such a little trooper! Floated so nicely! One small problem was that Z. kept trying to push him under the water, but we worked out a "No-abusing-baby-brother" agreement.
Since he's not scared of the water yet, and doesn't realize it's something unusual to be in it, he doesn't thrash or try to get out. So he just lied there nicely and floated! Then he kicked his feet while on his back, and if he would've had more space, he'd really swim.
I heard that some parents train their babies to swim right from birth, so since they're still used to the womb, they catch on right away and can swim underwater like fish. I wonder how they control their breathing?
Interesting to think about...

babies used to water are at advantage and r in danger.

asvantasge is that they prob. won't ever be scared of it and it won't be a novelty to them.
The disadvantage is that they may not be scared of it at all.

But babies taught straight from birth know how to swim. And I don't mean splash around.
If any kid sees a large body of water, whether they are used to it or not, they will be curious.

yes and parents tend to over estimate their child's abilities. Last study I read said before 4 kids can not learn how to get out of a bad situation. If anything it only makes it more dangrous cause parents think their kids can. From the lifeguards I have talked to they all say before 4 it should just be about being comfortable in the water so that when they get older they won't be so scared.

That's usually true, Zun. But depends on the age. I mean kids under 1 or 2 months. Since they are familiar with the sensation in the womb, they acclimate like pros. But if they do begin to drown or start to panic, their skills are useless.

And parents should be just as vigilant of little kids regardless of abilities.
If my baby learns to walk at 6 months, run at 8 and climb at 10, doesn't mean I'd leave him on the jungle gym at the park and bury my nose in a book while he climbs. KWIM?
