No sure whether this fits in the context of this disucssion group as I'm new here but here goes: 'm looking for a school for my son who's going into 9th grade. I'm still rather new to Brooklyn and dont' know of what's out there. Now, you may ask why I'm looking now. Long story short, he did 9th grade but went to Ohr Eliezer here in Brklyn and it was a disaster: learning was hit and miss. Sometimes teachers didn't show up Math/science/english) sometimes, when they did, learning was inpssible because of roudy students (I witnessed this myself). Imcompetence on the part of the staff, etc. No textbooks in some courses all year. I won't go on, but basically he didn't get hardly any learning the whole year, and was a waste of his time. SO, we're vacating his grades and giving him a fresh start since his birthday falls so late in the year and he started 1st grade a year early anyways so it's not a problem, and he's ok with it. However, I'm looking around for other schools, and people keep sending me to schools I've never heard of. I'm told to check out: Ratzad Be'er'Hagolah Sinia academy Does anyone know anything at all about thiese schools and if they're just another Ohr Eliezer, or would my son actually recieve an education at any of these? Other issues: as my husband and I are converts (the kids were all raised frum though) they keep wanting to send me to what I've learned are called "Kiruv" schools. My kids first went to Ohel Moshe when we got here 2 years ago, because it was the only school willing to take my kids in October after school already started. Personally, I don't understand why it's such a big deal to take kids after the year's started. We couldn't help it, as a job opened up for my husband who was unemployed and had to take it when it came. Well, that school year didn't work out well: disruptive students, my kids were harrasssed, very little discipline from the staff. My kids begged me to not send them there again. I found out it's a kiruv school, which I supppose means "wild, undiscplined kids from non-frum homes who have been "saved" from public school". Well, my kids do not fit into this category. They're well behaved, disciplined and want to learn. Why do people keep sending me to these types of schools?!! Is it because we don't have any money (because as converts, our family won't help us [big surprise], and we don't have generations of wealth from owning a busiess to tap into) We're worker bees here even though my husband went to college. Is it because we're percieved to possibly not be too religious (which could n't be further from the truth) because we're "new" to judaism? We've been converts 10 years now, and have even lived in Israel. We're not just religious, we're almost zealots in some ways because we've tried hard to seperate ourselves from the things we were raised with. If anything, we're more religious than some of the folks running these schools (as is apparent by women who don't observe tsnius working in the school office or teaching) Why do we keep getting sent to these types of schools? Also, Are there any scholarship funds out there for people like us who are not: immigrants from the FSO/Syria/Israel/any other place, not super-low-income, not baal tshuva's, etc. which seem to be the groups who most funds are thrown at. We're converts for Heaven's sake: We have no inheritance! We have family who think we're fools and should just put the kids in public school and be done with it. I need help here. thanks, Teshua |

I don't think that any of the schools you listed are what you are looking for. And please, please, PLEASE do not get involved with Sinai Academy. (Does it even still exist?) For the sake of your son, scratch that idea off your list. I found that the only way to deal with such situations is to go through a respected member in the community. Do you know any families that can vouch for you? Not the smiley types who grin and nod and pat you on the back condescendingly. I mean real, normal families, like the ones that helped you through your geirus and with transforming your life. Ask them for help placing your son in a NORMAL FRUM yeshiva. BTW, what is your religious orientation? Litvish? Or something more specific? |

hi and
:welcome: ! I'm sorry you have to deal with this! I know it is tough with the brooklyn schools. All the schools you mentioned are kiruv schools. They don't seem to fit your needs. they all have good points, but none are geared toward a frum family. most parents at these schools are not frum, some of the kids do become frum, but most likely are not totally observant. Would it be possible to tell us a bit about your son's personality and his needs so mayby we could give you some suggestions? :hugs :hugs I hope you are able to resolve this! I know it is tough. |

I agree with karapooz. I substituted years ago in Ratzad---a kiruv school and pretty undisciplined too from what I remember. |

I'm not familiar with the schools in your area, but a friend sends her kids to Chaim Berlin. |

First of all, welcome to the forum! I know 3 BT's who send kids to Chaim Berlim & from what i hear there are ton of BT kids. So your kids will not stand out as much. You are a BT in a sence that you did not grow up religious, and not every body has to know that you're converts. If you want, I can make a few calls to see who to approach in the Yeshiva about tuition. It is a shame that you're having such hard time.... |

Wow, what a tough prediciment to be in. :( Finding a boys high school in Brooklyn now is really difficult. A lot of them are full to capacity and the only way to get in is through using pull. The 3 schools people mentioned to you are definitely all kiruv schools. I don't know much about boys high schools in Brooklyn, but I know there is a lot of competition and it's hard to get in. I wish you much hatzlochoh. Do you have any rebbe or something that might have pull in one of the schools out there? |

I don't know about how to get in/ how to pay etc, but if I was making a list of regular frum "in town" (that means the kids go home to sleep) yeshivos in bklyn I would also mention Torah Vodaas, Mirrer yeshiva, the Chofetz Chaim one (I think it is tiferes yisrael but I am not sure), Kaminetz and I am sure there are more but it's been a while since I lived there and I had all my kids after I moved. |
