As a parent, I would remind you that just because you have "success" once does not mean you should not expect relapses. 

He may "experiment" with the biking option on and off for a while, until the weather gets bad and he realizes that a heated car is the best way...

Oh, absolutely! However, I don't think he will experiment with the 'get to school so late you get sent home' option again.
