I'm all for my kids earning their own money. The problem for ds is there's just no time. He's in school from early in the morning (he eats breakfast there) until supper. After which there's night seder. I can't imagine how he'd fit in a job. Dd wants to make some money but she's not really looking too hard for work. Between homework, extracurricular stuff (student council, performances, etc) and serious socializing, she'd have to really apply herself to finding and keeping a job.
I don't know yet about the summer yeshiva in Russia. Ds's first choice was something much closer to home, but that might not work out.
Now, about your Artscroll list. Just as soon as I win the lottery, you can have whatever you want. :)

I think it's time for this human ATM machine to shut down for the night.
(BTW, ds walked in from school today and the first words out of his mouth were, "Hi, Ma. I need money for tomorrow.")

Ds was quite respectful all day. He did try to tell me again that it wasn't his fault, others involved didn't get in trouble, etc and I just said 'hmm - well it would seem to me that the lesson would be when others are making trouble, don't get involved.'

So one funny thing - he told me that he couldn't believe I made him walk ALL THE WAY HOME and 'It was COLD!' I said 'I noticed you remembered to take a jacket to school today.' (has forgotten to take a coat or jacket most days all winter). He sort of sputtered for a minute and said "er, well, yes''.

Oh, and yes apparently word has gotten around that I did this and perhaps I should come to school with my shirt that say 'meanest mom alive' for the purim shpiel. My next neighbor stopped me to ask me 'was it TRUE I made him WALK HOME?!?!?!' Apparently she heard it from her husband. Oy.

And I did a mapquest search - it was 3.54 miles.

If it was a school trip/hike walking that far would be fun. I am really in shock that this would be considered mean.

I once had a 3 yr old who wouldn't go to cheder. I took him by his feet, turned him upside down and walked to the cheder like that, 2 1/2 blocks. We passed through my sefardi neighborhood, the Kretchnef Chassidim and frei people and everybody stopped to look. I deliberately did not make any sign of anger and laughed the whole way. When we got there the melamed took his feet and carried him like that into the class. He was astounded but not angry. The next day he was dressed before me. He is a married man and still remembers it when he is telling his wife as a joke,"Don't mess with my Ima".

Rikal - American kids are spoiled. There are kids who think they need to be driven 2 blocks away - and the parents buy into it!

Chavamom, thanks. I thought I was losing my mind there.
My kids don't get driven anywhere, but that's just life "in-town." Sometimes when dh has a day off from work the girls ask for a ride to school and he's like, "You gotta be kidding me." :<!--emo&LOL:-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

don't you tell your children that at their age you had to walk barefoot in the snow 6 miles to school every day, and it was uphill both ways? :ha

When we were in elementry school and complained to my father abt walking home from school he told us that he did it everyday and its part of growing up. when we were a little older he took us to the city he grew up in and showed us his house and school, shul etc..and guess where his house was..two houses down from the school. i also wouldn't complain abt walking that distance.

I think what you did was perfect. It really was the perfect punishment.
When teens start taking you for granted then they only get worse, you have to nip it in the bud at the begining and i think being tough is the only way.
I can probably see myself doing that if my kid did that was a teen and i wouldn't care about other parents, i think parents who give in to their kids and baby them are doing much more damage and so he walked 3 miles. I walk with my 3 year old home from his nursery which is about 1 mile and yes it takes us an hour because he is so tired and doesn't walk fast.
It will deffinately not kill the child and as for the no coat bit, he has to learn to suffer the consequences. Winter and cold and no coat is going to mean you are cold.
