its more than food though. there becomes a playdate issue, shabbos, birthdays, etc... Also- do you want your child learning yiddishkeit the way they are presenting it. I came from that system as now as an orthodox jew, I do not want my kid tp learn the way they present it. Are your kids going to learn brochos, daven in a way you want, encouragement of tzitzis and yamulka, etc...

True. I hadn't thought of all that. I so wish Hallie would learn more of that at her school!

In case anyone is curious, I'm discussing the schools in Riverdale in NY. From what I understand, Teaneck is not much cheaper, not that my husband is willing to move there in 3 yrs either. He's yearning to move back to the midwest, where he grew up.

Btw, Sara, i'm not sure if you noticed my email when i registered - it's me, Tammy.

It's me - but still here in NY til we move out west. My husband hates it here in NY!!!!!!

Rabbi Shemtov is the Chabad Rabbi here - maybe there's someone else for the pre-k??? I've been talking mainly with the director, Chaya, and everyone's been very nice, just not so helpful financially.

We're really leaning towards continuing sending him to the school he's at now. I just hate to see my husband work even more hrs to pay for it and I don't want to be away from my son for so many hrs. But it looks like it's basically that, the Reform place for less hrs and $, or nothing...and like i said before, i know my limits so nothing is not a great option. Especially for shalom bayis - my husband, after my toddler's 5th tantrum of the evening, told me that he NEEDS to be in a program next year. Dealing with the tantrums all day w/ no break makes me a wreck.

thanks for all the pm's - i got them last night...it's nice to get input from moms who don't live here. An "outside" opinion.

whenever we make a decision, i'll let you all know.

To Saul's mom, my husband takes our car to work every day so i need a school within walking distance. That eliminates everything but the few schools i've been looking at. There is no kindergarten walking distance so when my son is ready for that, i'll actually have a very big problem on my hands. I might have to lease a car for a year just to get him to school. (i don't like the idea of busing or having a friend take him both ways for such a young child)

Sara, you asked privately how people afford the tuition. They're either in business or law or medicine and earning 6 figures -or- their parents help pay. The average family could never afford such an amount.

But you have more than one or two kids even someone with a six figure salary can't afford! I don't see how with all our student loans and mortgage even if Dh made six figures how we could afford that price to be honest.

Oh and both schools told me directly to see if any family members could help with the tuition. Both said they receive checks directly from the kids' grandparents.

My parents barely pay their own bills - they're not exactly about to help me pay my own expenses. I'm just now getting a taste of what so many frum families deal with. For the average family, to pay a full salary's amount in tuition must be such a sacrifice. It has to be done if you want your children to go to yeshiva, but i imagine so many families struggle to make these payments and have to worry it about it constantly.

Sara, that's why we're leaving NY!!!! My husband is a doctor (though in training so he makes very very very little) but we're going to be living such a modest life if we stay here. We wouldn't be able to afford a house for years. If we move we can live a little nicely (i'm already dreaming of a third bedroom, a second bathroom, and a backyard - these are my only requirements for a house right now!)

;) ever consider philly. chinnuch isn't that bad here and we are in desperate need of docs! I just called 25 practices trying to find someone still taking patients for general practice. I have yet to find one less than an hour away from my house!
