Borsalinos are for shidduchim. I nearly fell off my chair when I got the bill for ds's wedding hat. I hope they are more reasonable than 800 SH ($200) over there.

They are more like $300 here. People buy them on trips to Israel b/c "they are so cheap there". Don't worry, I'm not springing for a Borsolino at this point.

You know what Israeli Lubavitch chosonim do? After the vort they go to learn in 770 and get the whole works from a set up by an Israeli gvir. It is very worth it.

Ticket= $1000 paid by bachur/parents

Provided free (Prices usual Israeli prices)

Choson classes $200
Hat 200
Silk Kaputa 400
Pants 50
Shoes 50
Assorted extras 100

Reg learning sedorim w/o being shlepped to shopping
No outrageous cellphone bills to kallah (I have had @1000 sh/mo after each vort.

I had one who was also in rebellion who used to "forget" his hat on the train every 2 weeks and I would get a call from the yeshiva to give my CC # as they are taking him to get a new one. :ouch :ouch :ouch :ouch

Eventually I told my ex that the next one was on him. He then did that kind of stern treatment that he has only done like 3 times in his life and boy did ds get the idea!

DH recently got a new one in NY for his sister's wedding- the euro/dollar is so bad, last time he payed $185US this time $200...I figure that's not so bad for once every year or 2 since he wears it every day and rotates the new one for shabbos, old shabbos one becomes the weekday one, but $300?!?!? sheeesh, I'd never let him get a Borsalino at that price!

You can get better deals in NYC. A while back a friend of mine got her dh and ds hats in a "two for one" deal. So even at the $300 price, it would have been 2 hats at $150 a piece. So her bar mitzvah bochur and her dh both got new hats for the bar mitzvah.

I should add that he's coming around. He asked for a new jacket. I said his grandparents have been offering to buy him one for a while, but he didn't want it. When he realized that meant a new jacket from Brooks Brothers (nice jacket) he got excited. I"m sure the next request will be for a Bors b/c he can't be seen in his Stetson

I think if he wants a borsolino buy him one. I also think they are better than the other brands. We bought DS 2 hats for his bar mitzvah and they got yucky really fast so we bought him a borsolino and it is really better. So it may not even end up being more money, but in either case if it makes him feel better about wearing a hat to davening it is probably worth it.
But I can't see sending it to camp to get ruined. One of the yucky hats is going instead.
BTW where is he going? Ds is going to bai kaita (I have no idea how to spell it) for July.

Yeah, I would put up for Borsalinos for my 13 and 14 yr olds if it would get them to wear them more often.

Dh's wedding hat is JUST now needing to be replaced. I think its worth the money and will be getting dh another for our ann. (he does not know. I will just get a gift certificate and he can pick it out). He had a different one before and it did not last. It ends up cheaper for us cause it lasted SO long!

OK, if he requests a hat and it will get him to wear it more, I'll look for one while we are in NY. $135 I can do. Stetson is not a bad brand though. Dh wears it and they don't fall apart or get yucky quickly. Anyone know of a place to buy a hat in the mountains?

We got ds#1 a Borsalino for Shabbos and a cheaper brand for weekday (and rainy days). I don't remember how much we spent, but it wasn't $300.

Chavamom, if you're in NY, Hatbox sells Borsalinos at a reasonable price.

I know some people who go there. (Actually, ds#1 knows them better.) The husband of the girls' head counselor here is a learning director there.
