My last name is too common

That's never been a problem for me. I always tell my kids that if they misplace something in camp, not to worry, because they're the only ones there with our last name.

My daughter is not shy about telling people how to pronounce her name if they get it wrong. She is polite about it but quick and firm so that it doesn't become an issue.

Last year - ds went to preschool at a more Yiddishe type school and with his name ending in a 'ah' he changed it to a 'i' at that school. So - off I went yesterday to get him iron-on stickers for towels, etc. for camp today. I am dressing him and he says, "Hey - this spells, "_ _ _ i"!! My name is "_ _ _ ah". So - since they are all ironed on and I sent in the application with his name the other way - what am I to do??

To do? nothing! you're the mother, whatever name you give him is the name he's got--even if his name should have been Harry and you spell it Hairy. :D Do you think the school won't know that "Duvid" and "David" are the same person?
