We're supposed to have a seuda after the fast. Usually, noone is in the mood for fleishig. But my fil is here this year. So we had cake, juice and milk to break the fast and had the seuda an hour later (around 10pm). Would you believe everyone ate! Even my soon to be 9 year old (tomorrow :D) sat down by the table. |

A few years ago we were away and our hosts have a "minhag" to eat steak for the seuda mafseket. We both had the best fast ever! So since then we have made steak and potatoes. DH made the seudah mafseket. We also always do dairy for break fast. it is too late for me to eat lots of meat. We had Starbucks coffee, spinach quiche with three cheeses, blintz souffle, salads, bagels and spreads and apple pie for dessert. I made the break fast. Why does Chabad do two meals before YT? Doesn't that mean you have to take off the whole day? |

We had challah & fish in tomato sauce earlier. For the seudah hamafsekes we had challah, chicken soup & kreplach, grilled chicken, mashed potatoes with onions and mushrooms, and israeli salad. |

Its only chabad that does two meals? I thought everyone does. Isnīt it because its a mitzva to eat on erev YK? |

It's definitely not only Chabad. All chassidim (that I know of) eat two seudos and many non-chassidim, such as my parents. |

I'm reviving this thread, because I'm having a hard time figuring out what to make this year. DH wants 2 meals with chicken, but he said I can make it the same meal! Of course, I don't think everyone will want the identical meal twice in one day. I also have to figure out what to serve the kids on YK, and it has to be something they can take themselves, as I need to stay lying down all day, and am not counting on being able to serve food. I have chicken cutlets (boneless, skinless breasts), so that's the basis for both meals. I thought for the first seuda, at lunchtime, I'd make the cutlets with wholewheat Israeli couscous (if I can find it), but I can't figure out what to put on top to season and keep it moist - it can't be sweet or too spicy. Second seuda, I'll make a vegetable soup, with bought kreplach (again, if I find them), then plain chicken breasts, with lots of boiled potatoes (dh's request) and butternut squash and broccoli I haven't made anything, except for the honey cake that's in the freezer. I even need to make challah dough. And all 3 kids are home tomorrow and dh doesn't have the day off work - -AAAK! So, between shopping, cleaning and childcare, I just don't have time or energy for a fancy meal. I might let the kids make themselves deli sandwiches for supper on YK, and make lunchboxes for lunch (if I find someone to walk the big kids to shul, they'll have sandwiches there). I know it's not yom tov food, but I'm supposed to be conserving energy even now, and I'm not up to dealing with fancy food or something hot. I think I'll stock up on nice treats to give them a yom tov atmosphere (no-one is old enough to be restricted yet). Any suggestions? Particularly simple side dishes! |

We were supposed to have company last Friday night. They never showed. So I had lots of leftovers. Dh wasn't opposed to the idea of saving the extra food for erev YK instead of for leftovers Sunday night. So I have most of my meal done. I'll make a salad or something and another honey sponge cake. It went over really well RH. |

I'm working all day and will get home very close to the start of the fast (about an hour to spare). Today I have fruit and some pasta and I'll have some chicken before I leave work. Lots of water and a berocca (b vitamin mix) before the fast as some of the B vitamins are supposed to be good for fasting. Cinnamon is widely reputed to supress appetite and would be a good spice to sniff on the day. I will be in services all day, I find that takes my mind off things anyway. The only other thing I know is if you eat a heavier meal, your body will lose more fluids trying to digest it, so I will only be having some watermelon and rockmelon just before the fast. |

risotto is a staple of our erev YK meal. For some reason since I started making it we have had much easier fasts. I don't know why, maybe cause its just so warm and filling. When we get home from Kaparos I will have homemade cinn. buns hot from the oven for everyone. challah first meal- soup with kreplach salad turkey roasted potatoes challah turkey soup w. kreplach(I make both soup kreplach and fried that we dip in honey.) turkey (depending on what dh finds will depend on how I cook it) risotto roasted veggies grapes, poweraid, and strawberries |
