Asher (age 3) can't keep anything down
:( Not even water! It began this morning. Dd (age 6) has a fever and is very lethargic, so far B"H she has been able to eat and drink. I guess the flu bug came to visit us for sukkos. G-d willing I will not get sick too because so far I have been able to be a good caretaker for them...if I go down... :ohno My mom is so kind, she is willing to come over and help but I don't want her to get sick too. I say that as long as I am healthy, she should stay away! However, I did allow her to pick up a plastic bag of yucky puked on sheets to bring home and wash for us (I told her to wear plastic gloves). We are down to putting towels on the bed! I am so blessed to have such good parents for me and grandparents for my children. |

Big hugs!! Watch Asher for dehydration. Have you called the doc? I would be concerned if they aren't keeping anything down. |

I'm not a doctor, but I have had a lot of practical experience with dealing with potential dehydration, working with docs to keep kids out of the ER. I was told to give sips of water from the tip of a t-spoon. I think the theory is that it gets absorbed in the mouth, so there is no chance of the stomach throwing it back up. I think I was told something like 1 tsp per 30 mins, but you should check on that. I was also told frozen is good, because it is slower ( water, diluted juice popsicles, frozen rehydration solution, eg pedialyte) Also, it helps to cool the kid. Be careful of ice chips in young kids, especially if they are lethargic, because of the choking risk. Popsicles work well (if you don't have molds, use plastic or paper cups, and put a plastic spoon in when half frozen - unmold under running water) Chicken soup is good because it has the electrolytes, but it should be clear broth with no fat (freeze it to scrape the fat off). Juice should be very diluted so you don't throw the sugars off. The golden rules are wet eyes and urination. Lethargy can be a problem, especially if fever is not reduced effectively, because even if the kid drinks, they are losing through perspiration, and can still dehydrate. Hoping that all this is no longer needed, and that they are already starting to feel better. It's really hard to deal with 2 really sick kids on your own - make sure you are taking time to look after yourself, too! Refuah Shleimah! |

Good tips npl - thanks for the idea about using cups with spoons because I have no idea where my popscile maker is. I didn't really have any bottles of juice so I used a few of dd's school juice boxes (100% juice) and squeezed them out into a few little plastic cups for the freezer. Thankfully they are both sleeping now and before he went to sleep, Asher was able to drink a bit of water and he also ate half of a piece of plain toast. It's been an hour now so I don't think it's coming back up. Sara - I called the doc just now (Kaiser advice nurse) and since he seems to be on the mend (G-d willing) we should be fine for tonight. I was also worried about dd because even with the Tylenol, she has a fever of 101.6 but she said not to worry unless she looks dehydrated. I think the fever made her have a bad dream though because she woke up quite distraught. I went in to her and she was still in half-sleep mode while I cooled her neck and forehead with a wet washcloth and she was back asleep in about two minutes. They look so little when they are sick. I really wish I had some children's Motrim right now to alternate with the Tylenol. It's too late to call anybody now and I thought I had a bottle of Motrim in the cabinet but it turned out to be just another bottle of Tylenol. I think tomorrow will be better for Asher because he does not have a fever and since being able to eat that food, he seems to be headed out of the woods. |

Glad to hear that things are looking better! FYI, in my experience, Motrin can be hard on sick tummies, so if you do use it, try to see if she can keep some food down first, to give it more chance of the medicine staying down long enough to be absorbed. Sounds like you are doing the right things to deal with the fever - tepid washcloths are great, as is just stripping her down so the sweat can evaporate (but make sure she doesn't chill - often down to thin pjs is enough) If it gets very high, you can also try a cool (not cold) bath, but in my experience this is hard to do with a lethargic or disorientated kid, and even more so single-handed. When ds1 could not tolerate any fever meds, we used suppositories (Fever-all makes some, but I'm not sure how a bigger kid would feel about using them). Also, we were told not to worry about the fever itself (ie the number and the fact that there is a fever) under about 103-4 F (can't remember what the exact number is, I usually panicked at about 102.5) and that it wasn't dangerous in and of itself if it was lower than that, just uncomfortable and you have to watch for the dehydration. Also, white grape juice is a good, mild, juice if you have any. Refuah shleimah everyone! Naomi |

Ugh! I'm sorry they have the bug! If it's any consolation, it does go away rather quickly. I have to give my kids pedialyte ice pops and I make pure ginger tea for me and dh. It's the only thing that truly works for us. Brings the dead back to life with no nausea within an hour. (peel and cut one ginger root, boil in water for roughly 30 minutes, set aside. Take a 1/4 cup and dilute it in 3/4 cup of water. Give patient a teaspoon every 2 minutes until you see a change. It happens quickly. :) |

The ginger tea idea sounds easy enough - I think there might be whole ginger roots at our local Safeway. I am hoping to get the kids out of the house today...I'm not sure. Asher is doing fabulous B"H! He had a good breakfast and is a chipper duck today. Dd said her throat hurt and didn't eat any breakfast. She did drink fluids so I am happy about this. Her fever is just very low grade today. I wonder if she is getting strept throat? Barbie, how would I know the difference? I might take her into immediate care today just so she can be looked at because if it is strept than I want her on meds ASAP to get rid of it. My bro called me this morning to see if I needed anything and I said we are good for now. I might call him back and ask him to get us a ginger root (I think he would know where to find it in the store...not totally sure though and I might end up with a stick of rhubarb at my door ;) ) |

Hallie had the fever for a while and then all of a sudden it became strep. It's hard to tell if it's strep of a post nasal drip if you look in their throats without doing a culture, however, if you see white dots... you have strep. Throwing up/nauseous isn't strep.. just run down and tired. Ginger root is so funky looking.. he may need to ask for it to get it. :) It's hard to get kids to want it bc it's strong tasting, even diluted. With honey or sweetener, it would make you REALLY nauseous. I keep it in the house for me more, just in case I get sick and need to NOT be, fast! I'm glad they are feeling better! The stomach flu really doesn't fly in and out quickly!! |
