This year I'm actually remembering and planning for the fact that Simchat Torah needs to be REALLY flexible, and there is a good chance the kids will eat their meals at wierd times, and without dh. Also, by the time dh gets home from shul in the evening he won't want a heavy meal.

So, my plan (as far as I got so far) is to make up "ingredients" for meals - lots of single dishes I can mix and match, and serve hot or cold, and easy for dh to choose for himself if I am asleep already!

As to what I'm going to make - well, that's another question all together :help

We are hopefully having guests Shmini Atzeret night, and out for lunch. So, I have to figure out the two meals for Simchat Torah, and I'll make shabbat meals on Friday, when I know what leftovers there are to work with. I just need to stock the refrigerator with raw meat and chicken in case it is needed.

Not sure my rambling has helped you any!

I treat Simchas Torah like a combination of Purim and Tisha B'Av. Not everyone eats and those who do so when they want. You clean up your own mess. Food is ready and available for those who want to eat but not in great amts.

This year dh and I are escaping leaving all 7 kids, 3 spouses and 4 gc in our house. :banana :banana :banana

Suggestions (easy heat up) schnitzels, salads, cold fish (tuna, herring, lox, etc) and rice dishes.

Life is easier for us as Fri. is not chag.

I'm planning dairy for Wed. night and having the main meal before candle lighting. Once Hakafot are over, we go home, have kiddush, hamotzi and then cheesecake.

Thursday lunch will be schnitzels, potato kugel, cole slaw and fresh salad.

OK, this is what I decided so far:

Everything gets cooked in fleishig dishes, but kept as free of meat as possible (I'll avoid cooking the kugels in the oven with the meat).

Shmini Atzeret night will be meat and chicken with kugels and veg.
Simchat Torah night will be fish, salads, etc - thanks for the idea of fish salads - I might get an assortment of fish and israeli salads, ready-made, that can become shabbat lunch first course.

Anyone care to share a shnitzel recipe? Do you buy the chicken already cut thin, or do you cut and pound it yourself? If so, how?

I buy the chicken breast thin already.

Plate with flour mixed with black pepper, garlic powder and paprika.

Bowl with beaten egg.

Plate with matzah meal and crushed dried oregano.

Dredge chicken in flour, dip into egg, dredge in matzah meal, fry.

Help! I don't want to cook anymore! I have yet to go shopping for food!

Finger foods like shnitzel work well to take to shul so the kids can eat before hakofos.

Then don't! Simchas Torah is a very buyable YT because people eat less and faster. If you don't want to spend major gelt on prepared make things that can be thrown with no prep into a foil pan, cover it and shove it in the oven. Rice checked ahead of time, baked potato, meat or chicken. Kids don't need dessert as they usually get peckelach or something after kol hanearim.

I have turkey, lamb, and beef roasts baking now. I can carve them up and everyone will be happy. I am making risotto and Israeli couscous. Also I will have deli rolls and franks in a blanket for the taking. Its a quiet time here- very rounded around family here. Dh does not drink at all so we will have fun but "quiet" meals.

we will be going away for the two lunch meals.

So I will be making 4 meals

soup I have in the freezer, but I need to make appetizers and main dishes.

I have stuffed cabbage in the freezer too, I need a bit more challah too....

I have no idea what I am making!

Well, since posting my ideas, I've decided I'm not well enough to cook up a storm. We haven't heard from the guests we invited, and assume they aren't coming, so dh has decreed that he will stock our refrigerator with prepared foods from the supermarket to suppliment the little I have in the freezer. I suggested asking for chessed again, and he feels we could manage ourselves better, buying what we know the kids will eat. We are out one meal, and Simchat Torah is so unconventional anyway, that we will do fine with mix-and-match ingredients.

So, now I'm on strict orders to stop worrying, rest up so we can all get to our lunch invite, and let him handle it all. I'll even let him buy challah!

npl - prepared foods is the way to go!

Wed night we are going to my BIL/SIL's house, and Thursday lunch we'll be at my parents. Not sure what's going on the rest of the days, but DH's family minhag is that they don't eat in the succah on simchat torah or shmini aseret, so we can have quiet meals at home.

For shabbos, DH invited my BIL/SIL and niece over, as well as another couple - that means 5 guests! Woah! Seeing as how I struggle making food for 2, this will be a great feat. This is what DH proposed (directly quoted from his email):

"I recommend your famous Lasagna..mmmm..makes me hungry just thinking about it.
gefilte fish- we have some frozen ones in the freezer
chulent
vegy salad
one other salad
estrog merange pie:)"

Oops, I just clicked show smilies in pop up window - hey there are lots of smilies to choose from. Neat. But... :ot2 Ooooh I'm lovin' this: :rebyid yay!

Happy cookin' ladies :cheer :coolparty
