While Dylan is definitely not the only Jew - he's still in the minority. We'll be supplying some books and, if I can find them, some big dreidels. We always give the teachers an "end of year" gift (one of his teachers was Muslim last year). |

I'm just curious about something and never knew when/where to ask it, but figured this could be the right place. Would anyone send to a non-Jewish preschool in a church? I have one right near me and there are many Jewish kids there (which I know because some of the parents are colleagues with my dh) and I never thought twice about it til someone brought it to my attention (that she had an issue with that) but I was wondering your opinions. |

For me personally, it would depend on what they were teaching the children. If they were learning religious type things then no - I wouldn't be comfortable sending my child there. However, in many cases, people just rent space from the church and there is no religious affilliation. |

The halacha proscribes entering a church. |

Because it's a place of idol-worship. (Most opinions hold that Xanity is idolatry because of belief in the trinity). |

Years and years ago, my mom sent my brother to a nursery located in a church. They told her they just rented space and it was completely non denoninational. Well... after 2 weeks my brother (then 2 or 3) asked my mom about the "man upstairs". Mom confronted the school. The teacher's mouth dropped and said, "he was paying attention? No one pays attention...".. yeah, that was his last day there. There were a lot of non Jews in my daughters Nursery school at the local synagogue... Personally, and this is from my own experience, I was once in a Catholic Church at a fair with a friend who wanted to take a short cut through the sanctuary. I couldn't put one step in. I saw her take off and I cried.. scary place. I am guessing though that some people send their kids to Christian schools if a non denonimational school or Jewish school is not around. I'm lucky enough to live in a place where I don't have to deal with that. |

I went to a nursery school that used the basement of a church. We have friends that sent their kids to a local nursery school that does the same thing - rents space only, no religious affiliation. However, at this point in my life, that would seem too weird to me. |

I went to a Catholic pre-school as a child - that was all that was available. I'll never forget, a nun cracked my hands with a ruler for writing left handed. I took the ruler and hit her back. I think I was 3 or 4. |

It's not that clear cut. When I asked the question (because I was active in Guiding and at one point all the units I might be assigned to met in churches) I was told it's forbidden to enter the sanctuary, but that the rest of the building has no "kedusha" (for lack of a better way to put it, lehavdil). |
