I know I couldn't send my children to a non-Jewish school, let alone a school affiliated with a church. That's just my comfort level. My gut feeling is that since at this age, they're so easily influenced, I want them to learn in a school where there is some sort of Jewish curriculum. When they're a little older and I'm more sure that their identity as Jews is firmly established, then I'll begin introducing them to others' beliefs.

My oldest goes to regular public school and is definetly in the minority. I went to his "holiday season" concert today...it was ok. They threw in a token Chanukah song and even one for Kwanza. That made me laugh because it is an African American holiday...we don't live in America and we live in a part of the country with very, very few people of African decent. This is his school trying to be PC and right by everyone. I guess it is broadening their horizons.

On the flip side, my middle guy goes to a Jewish preschool, and it was lovely to not have to dodge tinsel and candy canes in the class.

It is hard for Jewish kids in public school this time of year, the curriculum goes out the window, x-mas music is played non-stop and all the friends are very excited.

Oops...forgot to answer about the giving of prezzies. I buy a box of winter themed cards and give gift certificates on the last day before school break. I thank them for such and such and say enjoy the holidays.

I know when I had a nonJewish babysitter, there was a shayla as to whether we were allowed to give her gifts for her holiday to begin with. I think it had to be given not aroudn the holiday, and given not as a gift, something more like a bonus.
