That last picture is both beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Good G-d, how lucky some of us are.

Ali, your pictures are tremendous. I adore them. I always knew I was sheltered, but this confirms it. You have family outside Bali? Anywhere else?

and to everyone else.. keep sending them! This is incredible!

Yes, my uncle married a balinese woman and has two children. they lived in her family village until the kids were ready for school. His children speak Indonesian to him, Balinese to their mum and english to us (they are 5 and 7) at school they learn all three, as well as Mandarin. I cant get that for my kids in Aust! I have family in New Zealand as well.

Dina - I got a ic of the chabad house in Bangkok of all places, I'll try to find it. We also found a kosher restaurant there and a bunch of hostels caterin for Israeli tourists! I was walking along and also of a sudden the squiggly writing was readable, LOL!

Hallie and Aris mum - For me it is an important part of my kids upbringing that they have cultural awareness and an understanding of how others live. Aust is so close to Asia and gave us a chance to show them a different culture. My eldest is 5 and she got a lot out of the trip. We came back to Sydney and went to a Judaica shop to buy some things and all the kids ran in and ran around pointing at the Joo-ish stuff and were excited to see familiar things after a month in predominantly bhuddist and in my uncles case hindu cultures. The staff were a bit put off by their excitement I think!!! I think it gave my eldest in particular a better sense of who she is, as well as an appreciation of how lucky she is and what its like for people in our country who come from elsewhere and have different ways/language etc. A real eye-opener trip, sometimes hard (try explaining you dont eat pork or shellfish in vietnamese, thai, lao etc!!), but we are glad we did it and planning another trip for a few years time.
