my husband's family gets rid of all their mezonos. i am trying 2 remember which cereals i am allowed to keep in my house? which are allowed - i have rice krispies, corn flakes and was going to buy special k. are these all good to have locked up on pesach? i know corn flakes is haadama but i wasn't sure abouty some ofthe ingridients.

i apologize for bringing up pesach this early but i am already not buying any more pasta...
trying 2 use up what is in my cabinet instead of giving away 50 dollars worth of food :)

If it has "malt" in the ingredients, it probably has barley in it - whether that comes under your category of mezonos that needs to be finished, I don't know. I know some people don't keep any chametz mamash (actual chametz) although they will sell their rice, beans, etc, that is kitniyos, or other foods that aren't pesachdik, but don't actually contain chametz. In that case, any cereal that contains malt will need to be finished. If it is only those foods that you make a bracha mezonos on, then you should be OK with corn flakes, although you would have to ask about rice krispies because it isn't one of the five grains. If memory serves, Special K actually contains wheat.

Hope that hasn't muddled you further! And, I for one, am also whittling down stored food, as much to make space for pesach food, so I can start buying early.

How do you do this? I will need to buy and store early as I am bringing in most everything from out of town. Do you just keep a shelf totally clear of everything else, line it with paper, and then store your pesachdika foods there? Does this keep them chametz free and good for the hag?

I would also double bag them if they were going to be in a place where there is still chametz. (like the kitchen) technically if they are sealed and kept away from other food it should be fine. But little kids with prying hands throw a monkey wrench into this kind of stuff. Better safe then sorry, especially since you are importing most of it!

Rice Crispies are Haadoma according to some, and mezonot according to others.

I think you may need to call the agency that gives hechsher (kosher sertification) on the sereals to be 100% sure.

If it says that it's gluten free then you can keep it. If it doesn't say anything, you can call them up and ask if it's gluten free.

About making space for Pesach food. I consolidate my food cupboards so that 1 is totally empty, and clean and line it. Then I put the food away straight from the shopping bags and tape it shut. I undo the tape each time I need to add to it. I pack it tight and full, because this is only temporary till I've emptied the other cupboard and can use both.
In previous homes we just haven't had the space (we've kept dishes in the dining room and food in the hall closet!) so I find some other place to put it until I switch my kitchen to pesachdik. It doesn't need to be convenient. Even boxes in a place that doesn't get traffic, like the basement, a walk-in closet, the linen closet. If you seal the box up, or use a plastic storage tub with a lid, then you can be sure there will be no chametz getting in there - just be careful of those little hands that like to explore everything!
