My girls go to the local traditional community Jewish day school. We were happy, and looking forward to having their little brother join them next year for junion kindergarten. So, a month ago, I fill in his application, along with the re-enrollment forms for the girls, and put a call in to the tuition office. I get a frantic response from the secretary, telling me that I need to get my azz in right away because "his application is really late, everything is filling up and I'm not sure that they'll have space for him". I drop everything, speed over there in person (I had been planning to send the stuff in), and this lady keeps telling me that I may be too late - she'll take the registration and deposit, but they won't be able to let me know if he's in until the end of March. I have a sudden vision of trying to explain to the family that I messed up and Yoni won't be going to this school. I go into total panic. I call up his existing daycare and put down a deposit for a spot next year, just in case. Then yesterday, I open the mail and find info about the new preschool programs next year at the school. They look great - esp. the option for full-day JK students to have Hebrew immersion in the afternoon. The letter encourages us to tell our friends and neighbours about the programs. "Hmmm - why would they say that if enrollment is full already?" I say to myself. I call the school, and on call #3 I get my answer: Yoni is in for next year. There is space. There don't usually confirm these things - you just assume that if you submitted the full registration package, you're registered. So, part of me is annoyed that I went through all this worry, but mostly I'm relieved and excited! I'll have two years with ONE pick up and drop off for all 3, and I'm really looking forward to the Hebrew immersion program. I don't think it should be too hard for him - quite frankly, he learned English from our Filippa nanny for 2 years, and has been learning English this year from nursery school teachers who speak Hebrew and Russian. My 5 yr old is learning English from her Hebrew-speaking kindergarten teachers. Learning ivrit b'ivirt (Hebrew, in Hebrew) at this point just makes sense. |

My ds went to school for the very first time (no daycare, nanny, etc) and went straight into Hebrew immersion (just half-day, so no English programme at that age). He did great -adjusted well, got the hang of things, etc. I was worried about the Hebrew immersion as his first away-from-me group experience, but it was just fine! Glad it's all sorted for you! I have to say I was shocked when I started trying to enroll my youngest for Nursery last year. I started looking really early, and found out that I was too late for the popular one near us by. So, when the kids' current school sent out re-registration packets in November we started looking into the possibility of changing schools, and the prospective school said we had plenty of time to decide! |
