Yup - that's right Ladies. This is the first year I am doing this but I am all on my own and I have zero help so I've decided that this is going to be my birthday present to myself (an early birthday gift since my b-day is April 30 and I just missed having a matzah cake by mere days!) I always get a check from an uncle and I'm good to go on things like makeup and clothes but a housecleaner I have NEVER splurged for before. I am so excited. I think I will have her come twice in the two weeks before Pesach. I'll have a good headstart but she can help with some of the scrubbing. This is super fabulous for me - I can not tell you how decadent I feel LOL

So for those of you who delight in this joy weekly, what shall I have her do to maximize her time here? What do you like your cleaning lady to do especially before Pesach?

good for you Zees. I love when someone else cleans my place. If english is not their first language I would make a detailed list for them to follow the first few times.

I second bathrooms and kitchen. Mine changes our sheets, scrubs the floors and puts all the toys away as well. Maybe ask her to remove couch cushions to clean there (or you do so then she can clean the floor after you did that). Mine does not do windows, or under the bed well, so you'll have to ask. Mine WILL do the fridge if I ask, but not always, and I do give extra for that.

YAY for getting help! I get help once a month, but if we win lotto, that's the first thing that changes!

Dusting, and moving stuff around to to clean the shelves, and under the bed, behind the couch etc. Oh yeah, dusting the blinds too!

When I had weekly help, her first job was bathrooms, 2nd was bedrooms (floors), vacuuming/dusting, and the floor downstairs. I'm really picky about my kitchen, so I usually do that myself, but pre-Pesach I have no shame about asking her to clean out my fridge, freezer, and oven!

get her to do anything that you don't like doing! and if there's something you know she's good at after you have her a few times, get her to focus on that. i used to have this unbelievably amazing lady come and clean for me (i miss you natalie wherever you are... but probably not on here). she moved further north for cheaper rent and then stopped cleaning (which she only did for me for a few hours a week) b/c of less money but after a few months called me that she'll come back one day since she wanted to get her kids presents so I had her reorganize all my closets and the cabinets in the kitchen too b/c she was amazing at that (not the type to throw e/t in but really organize well).

otherwise get her to do hard work - scrubbing, vacuuming, high up reaching stuff... enjoy!

I agree that you should get her to do the physically demanding stuff, like bathrooms, washing floors, etc. You may not feel comfortable with someone new going through your closets, or confident that they know what to look for when checking for chametz. But, when someone else does the heavy cleaning, then you have more time and energy for actually checking for chametz.
Other jobs I get my cleaning help to do - cleaning the refrigerator, heavy scrubbing in the kitchen, washing the outsides of cupboards. Of course, you will check afterwards for any details she may have missed (even when doing it myself I go back later for a second check for spots I missed).
On a side note, make sure you ask your mashpia what ACTUALLY needs to be done - you may find that there are areas you thought you needed to clean that aren't an issue, or that there are areas you overlooked. Especially if this is your first time, I'd ask a shaila. Also, I find I need to allow most time for the play room (not because I expect to find chametz, just because there is lots to check through) and the kitchen and dining room. Even though our dining room really only has the table and chairs to clean, it takes a long time to get the crumbs out of the cracks, and get the sticky handprints off the backs of the chairs!

I remember the last time I had a cleaning lady - she left a note on the kitchen table to say that the house was not clean enough for her and she was never coming again.

These days, I borrow a friend's children, negotiate a suitable fee and give them a list of suitable jobs. They love it - and are much more helpful in their own home as a result.
