Last week, I asked for assistance with a recipe I could cook with a 12 year old. Well, I did not need it.

The said 12 year old told me what we were going to have and I then got out a recipe book. She then told me that we did not need this as she knew exactly the ingredients required. We then went to the supermarket and she dictated a list of items, which I obediently bought. I then assisted HER in the kitchen whilst she cooked a vegetarian spaghetti bolognaise with considerably more skill than I could ever display. I was relegated to the washing up.

She was appalled that I did not have a garlic crusher!

I am a true dummy in this field and this week I shall hot click to Amazon and see if I can discover a path to culinary enlightenment. In the meantime, recommendations for a simple cook book are welcomed. In England, we have Delia Smith and Nigella Lawson but they are too complex for me (and not kosher).

Simple kosher cookbook suggestions:

Anything by Norene Gillitz (she was editor of "Second Helpings, Please!", a phenomenal fundraiser for B'nai Brith Women, which came out in the late 1960s. It was the main cookbook used by my bubbies and my parents, and many recipes start with the line "combine all ingredients". That cookbook is now somewhat dated - people don't really eat jello salads anymore - but she went on to have a career as a cookbook writer, and now focuses on healthy kosher cooking. I have her books "Healthy Helpings" and "Norene's Healthy Kitchen".)

Moosewood Cooks at Home, by the Moosewood Collective. These are simple vegetarian (with some fish) meals that can be prepared at home in 30 min or less. Nothing is complicated.
