What kind of things do you get rid of? I have a closed sealed bag of flour, (never done that before!) should I toss it? I also have cake mixes, but I have gotten rid of those before, but since I was asking aobut the flour, I figured I would add those in. What do you get rid of-as in throw out?

There are different customs as for keeping and selling "chametz gamur," foods which have actual chometz in them. Some people will get rid of all, some people only sell closed packages, and other people put it in a cupboard that is taped down and sell it.

Flour is not considered chametz until it is mixed with water. You shouldn't have to get rid of it at all. I don't know if you have to get rid of cake mixes or not though. You would need to aks your rav. We are planning on selling our chametz gamur this year, and not throwing it out, though I am trying to get rid of as much of it as I can before Pesach comes.

We do sell chametz gamur, but we try to limit it to something substantial - that we wouldn't consider throwing out. So, the almost finished package of cereal we don't sell, dh's half bottle of fancy whisky that was bought in England, we will sell, and the other real chametz, like the crackers and pretzels, we will use up. By the time I sorted what wasn't chametz gamur, and the stuff that was just sitting there because someone else would finish the stale (whatever) which I will bite the bullet and throw out, there really was very little left over.

I toss things that aren't a big deal, but I have a huge problem with throwing out food. I know chametz is an issue d'oraita (from the Torah), but to me throwing out food is bal tashchit as well. If it's sealed, it gets donated to a non-Jewish foodbank, if it's open it gets either finished or put away and sold (depends really on time & quantity!). I will throw it out only if it's something that has expired or gone bad.

I try to finish whatever's in the fridge and freezer because I need the space for Pesach. We close up the cabinets and sell everything (open or closed).
