I went to have a meeting with Saul's teachers today- he got his reportcard and did fine- but since I dont see the teacher on a regular basis- i wanted to talk to her about how he is doing, what we should be working on, and overall how he is in her class. She had some very nice things to say- but she also told me that he is obsessed with time. he wants to know how long each activity will last- and if it is supposed to last 20 min but lasts 25 he gets upset. same if my inlaws are to pick him up at 12pm but show up at 12:10 he gets upset. he does well if there is structure or if no structure whatsover (ie he is fine in free play) but the in between really gets to him. she isnt sure if we kept him there for longer days (he is 1/2 day now) if that would help or if 5pm would become the same as noon- ie he is waiting for the time to come and is anxious/upset if it passes. has anyone else dealt with this? any ideas? |

How old is Saul? It sounds something like the difficulties ADHD/ADD kids have at times. It's one of the things that really bother them. |

Maybe you can give him a digital watch so that he can follow time on his own? |

Have you tried talking to him about it? Like explain to him that sometimes things take not exactly the time that they're supposed to |

My ds is like that and was really into it at the age of 3. He grew out of it to an extent but it is his personality overall. He was even like that as an infant in terms of feeding and sleeping! I will write more later or you can ask me questions but I have to run to carpool now! |

that sounds exactly like my son also. Overall, a large part is a personality thing and won't change. My son does well wearing a watch (dollar store brand but he did ask me in all honesty if it's a Tourneau after hearing that name on a tape!) but we explain to him that as much as we like for things to fall into a certain time period, it won't always be exact and you can discuss certain scenarios that might come up or things that have made the 2 of you late. Also, spontaneous activity is also good - like get him used to veering out of the normal routine sometimes like if normally on a certain day you head straight home, make a stop and use that as a learning experience - like "Daddy is probably wondering what happened to us since usually we come home at exactly 6 o'clock but because we are now at the grocery store, we will be a little later." On a positive note, from all his clock watching, he really has a concept of time without being able to actual tell time. He knows that when it's 6:50 it's getting closer to 7 and when he was around 3 decided he should wake up at 6:59 and would wait patiently in his bed until the clock turned to that time! |

just because people can concentrate for longer periods actually does not rule out add/adhd. It is only one of many symptoms one could have. |

I was like that. I still am. No other add/adhd symptoms ever... just anal about time. I must be places early and consider myself late if I'm even 3 minutes off. I time things and activities down to the minute and make sure I'm early everywhere I go. My brother was like that too as a kid. We'd argue about leaving in 15 minutes or 13 minutes. Seriously. Who cares? We did! I remember asking the teacher EVERYDAY about, "can bussers get their coats? We only have 3 minutes left and I need to be ready!" The teachers wanted to kill me but I'd panic at the thought of not being ready. |

My son is also like that, he had a lot of OT issues when he was a baby, and one of his main problems was his inability to deal with anything out of the ordinary. Meaning if the morning routine was even i drop different, he could not cope for hours later. When he got older it became a time issue, and he keeps running tabs on the time. He had about 3 years of OT , which really helped him. He out grew most of the other issues, and he isn't nearly as time oriented as he used to be. My other son became time obsessed when he realized he could tell time, being able to tell time meant, he had to tell time every chance he got....Eventually, the novelty wore off! |

But I don't see why caring about the time and being late is a sign of ADD/ADHD either. Maybe if a child was too concerned to the point that they couldn't do other things, I'd be concerned about OCD or anxiety issues. I think a lot of kids see things in black and white and if the concept of time is something that interests them, then they just don't get it if others don't follow the specific regimen. A part of it is personality also. B"H my son is one of the highest in his class and is doing absolutely amazing in school with no concerns but at 3 he really was almost obsessed with time but the novelty overall wore off but a certain amount he will always be and it's probably also because I HATE being late too! |

I was pointing out a misconception and misunderstanding of add/adhd because people should know that that line of thinking when it comes to it is not necc. fact. |

Oh I see. I thought you were saying obession with time is a sign of ADD/ADHD when I'd think if anything it could be suggestive of OCD or anxiety if other signs are present. If not, it's personality or a "novelty" thing. |
