Wow - there are Jews out there who are actually on time for things? That's a fabulous notion - I can't remember a meeting EVER starting on time when we'd have huge international Hillel conferences etc... JST (Jewish Standard Time) is pretty much the basic excuse for showing up anywhere from ten minutes to a half hour late for things - I can't stand it! On a serious note - Saul'sMom it sounds to me like your son is very smart and just likes to make sure everything is on schedule as it should be. I like the watch idea - we gave one to dd when she was about 3 and it was perfect. She would look at the numbers and wait for the "right minute" to happen - it's a great teaching and learning tool and hopefully it will give him peace of mind as well. |

What I was saying about ADHD is not that a child being obssesed with time has ADHD, but rather commenting on the fact that Saul's mom said he had difficulty with what is defined as transition time. This is a sign of ADHD/ADD. But, I said a sign, I didn't say he has ADHD/ADD. In fact, ADHD/ADD is under-diagnosed not over-diagnosed because there are so many symptoms. My daughter can concentrate for long periods of time, she's excellent at math, but she has AD(H?)D. Kids who have ADHD are generally a lot smarter than other kids. Their problem is more using their potential because they lack the skills that most kids do have when it comes to academic stuff. |

he is actually ok with transitions- can go easily between activities. the problem is if he expects an activity to take 15 min- then he wants to last 15 min- not 20. when he asked me last night how long something will take- i told him it will eventually be done- lets see if that nondescript time works |

Sauls mom - what`s your personality like in terms of schedules and stuff - are weekends or off times very scheduled? If so, maybe some deviation from normal routine would relax him a bit to see that times are not always carved in stone. |

since we both work outside of the home- there is a schedule to most of the days. we also have jammed packed weekends- which are trying to cut down. im also hoping that come september when i drop him off at school (rather than my inlaws) he will be calmer since he will see me more in the mornings |

That's how my younger son is. He needs to know what time it is. He takes forever to get ready, but if we're late for something he wants, he counts the minutes. I think it's a personality trait. Not necessarily a bad one. It could show that a child is organized and each thing needs its time and place. If a child is having difficulty with things not running on time, it could help to explain that not everything is predictable. If things run late, it's not a bad thing, i.e if playtime runs over by 10 minutes, that's 10 extra minutes he gets to play. I like the idea of a watch. |

he didnt want to wear the watch- so we havent pushed it. we have been varying pickup times and he is prepared that since he is 4 and going into the 4 yr old class he will stay a full day. the one time we did it now (till 2pm because they had a cook-out) he gave us a really hard time in the morning- but was fine when dropped off and picked up (though cried much later that night when he saw us) hopefully the varying of his schedule will work. thanks for asking! |
