What kind of tzitzis for my tzaddik'l?

Hi all!

My baby (sniff) is turning 3 IY"H on 18 Av and we are having his mesiba tzitzis next Monday evening with the Rav at our shul.

I need to buy him some tzitzis but was a little confused. I didn't realize there were so many kinds. There are the regular kind (cotton/poly?), and the undershirt kind with or without snaps.

So I was thinking to just buy the regular kind and put them on him over an undershirt, but then the undershirt ones might be easier. On the other hand, I presume those would have to be washed way more frequently than the regular ones.

Huh.

I know this isn't earth shattering or anything but I want to get him something comfortable and easy so he won't be aggravated by a mitzvah, chas v'shalom. Dh does not (*YET*!) wear tzitzis, so he has no input.

Try a couple of different types and see what you will like. The one thing I would suggest to you is not to buy anything too expensive and don't get too upset if one doesn't last (like gets muddy and then cleaning it frays the strings).

Or if your son manages to rip the thing in half 2 days after he gets a new pair...

I buy the bigger boys the undershirt thing, my 4 year old is really tiny so I get him the smallest size in cotton poly, it has pictures on it.

:ha that's funny! btw, i didn't know there are tzitzis with pictures on them!

dh got ds tzitzis that are like a sleaveless shirt, and the one the just goes over the head, like a "grown-up" one. we never use that one, only when the others are in the laundry. i like the shirtlike ones, they are most comfertable for him.

My boys haven't tried the t-shirt ones yet - I balked at the price!
They just wear the regular kind (though I think the begged [cloth] part is actually 100% cotton).
They both liked the ones with the picture one when they turned 3.
To be honest, neither of them were reliably enough toilet trained to wear tzitzis all the time at age 3. And even when ds1 was toilet trained he found the tzitzis awkward to handle for a while. We don't insist on them till the kid is ready for it. Nice to wear them to go to shul, ds2 wore them to school after he turned 3 and both boys took them off at home. This summer, ds2 is still having accidents, and so he isn't wearing them right now. We'll try again a week or so before school starts, hopefully.

So, don't worry about what kind he will eventually prefer - go for cheap right now, because they'll either not be worn that much, or he'll wear them all the time and they will get washed often and not last. When he is older, and growing more slowly, he'll be able to tell you what he'd like to try, and then you can invest in the t-shirt kind.

Just my 2C

And, btw - MAZAL TOV! Time flies!

Oh I think Asher would be very interested in ones with pictures on them. Did you order online or does someone bring them back for you? Link?

I would love it if my ds (about to turn four at the end of the month and yes sniff - time does fly!!!) wore tzit tzis to shul (can't do it all the time or he would be such an alien in my town.)

Noam likes the t-shirt ones (without the snaps) in general, but in the summer he's been all about the mesh ones.

Well we went to the store to pick them out, and I thought he'd go for the ones with Elmo or trains or whatever printed on them.

Nope. Plain white. But he did want a pack of Mitzvah Kinder dolls. So we got 3 pairs of plain white (100% cotton) and a pack of two mentschies. :rofl

He's not sure he wants these at all, so we will take it as it comes, but at least there's something for the mesiba tzitzis and then for school. He's been trained since the start of the summer, and is usually reliable, but is sometimes, uh, off-aim. We shall see. will post pics bli neder afterwards.

Yes, we know all about that. :nod Between ripping his tzitzis and his pants, I think we support the clothing stores. :ha

We got the tzitzis with pictures for both boys' upshernishes. Otherwise, they had regular white cotton tzitzis.

3 year olds eat tzitzis. often literally I got the ones with regular strings as opposed to wool as they last longer than the garment. Mazal tov and much nachas.
