Well, ds has progressed to not putting actual puddles on the floor, although we are still getting drops in the underwear regularly. But, with school starting in less than 3 weeks, I figure it's time to teach him to handle his tzitzis when he uses the bathroom. Right now he isn't wearing them at all, because we were concentrating on at least getting to the bathroom in time. His complaint is that he needs to sit down, hold the seat with one hand, and point down with the other. Any hints for teaching him how to keep them out of the way? |

Well, although he demonstrated recently that he can stand, I think he's worried he'll aim wrong and make a mess (let's just say that a less-punctilious family member often leaves nasty surprises on the toilet seat!). Standing will definitely be easier. At nursery, the teachers took the boys' tzitzis off and put them back on for them, but (a) I don't think they'll do that in JK, and (b) it's not something I think he can do himself, so it doesn't get us any closer to independence. In a week, his older brother will be home during the day, and they'll have 10 days to practice together. I'll think ds1 will get a lot out of being a role-model for his younger brother, so there are benefits to both kids, come to think of it. I guess the first stage is to see if I can encourage him to pee standing, then if I'm successful we can introduce the tzitzis, and put in some consistent practice with his brother. I'm so glad that we've reached the stage where he is taking responsibility for staying dry (rather than us having to point out that he needs to go, and then having him deny it and holding on till he has an accident). And I don't want to jeopardize that by pushing with the tzitzis. More important that he stay dry at school than he be able to keep his tzitzis on, I guess. |

I could, but I think it's one more thing for him to think about and do while he holds it in. And I don't think it would be encouraged at school (especially in the winter, and when he needs to use the washroom in the middle of recess while wearing snow-pants and jacket.) I have a feeling standing will work better for him. He usually only needs to sit down once a day, and as I haven't taught him to wipe effectively yet (still have some minor gi issues) I'm hoping that won't be an issue at school. Last year he didn't do #2 at school. |

News flash. Most little 3 yr olds in cheder do not aim well. And their older brothers and fathers aren't perfect either. In a house like mine, nearly all male, a little splash of bleach on the floor around the bowl tells the whole tale. I always encouraged my boys to stand as soon as they could. I did not even want the pushing down not to shpritz thing. In the long run standing is neater all the way around, and easier. Edited by rikal, Aug 14 2008, 04:20 AM.

Rikal! Funny you should say that - I find that the ds who sits is the only one who doesn't miss the bowl! Yesterday I sent the boys together, but ds2 managed to get his pj top and bottoms wet as he started. Not sure what went wrong, but I'm sure they'll figure it out together. According to ds1, his little brother already got the idea. |

Yikes! When my oldest ds discovered that some boys at school were able to pee without pulling off their underwear, he was desperate to try it himself. He was so frustrated that the underwear he had didn't facilitate it, even though it looked like it would. Needless to say, when he needed the next size, the operational aspects were as important to him as what character they were decorate with! |

No great advice here but we have been rolling up the tzitzis with the undershirt (that's underneath them) along with the top t-shirt and it works about 60% of the time, which is all I can hope for at this point. :doh! |
