"frik" kippa...bad idea?

Okay so ds is 3 and goes to a "yeshivish" yeshiva school. Although it's also a community school with a wide variety. He usually wears a velvet kippa but they don't stay on very well. I was thinking of getting him a black knit "frik" style one (large bowl-style knit) so it might stay on his head. He has a buzz cut so clips are a no-go. He had some frik kippas before that a nice mama got and sent me, but they're all too small now and that was last year.

Also I think they're cool and it sort of meshes with my 'Torani Leumi" philosophy but maybe it's a dumb thing to put on him.

Is this stupid? I am really silly, I know. I don't think 3 year olds notice this particularly, but there isn't a good reason to make him stick out, right?! A kippa is a kippa. But then again, it's not.

This should be the most aggravating decision I ever have to make, right?! I must have too much time on my hands. Or maybe I'm just procrastinating more important things. :crazy

Oh! I was totally the opposite! I thought that the boys should wear kippot srugot - it's what my dbs wore, and what dh wore for a long time (he switched to suede at some stage, not sure why, except I think it was more discrete at work).
So, we battled with finding clips, making sure they were clipped on securely but not too tight, etc.
One day, ds tried a decent-sized velvet one that was the right shape for his head. He decided he preferred not needing clips, and was happy to switch. Which meant that when ds2 turned 3, he also wanted the velvet.
Sure, they sometimes fall off, ds2 is obsessed with wearing a cap/hat when he's outside so it doesn't blow off, and ds1 tends to wear his in his hand quite a bit. But, they decided they preferred them, and they were pretty-much the only boys in their classes to wear velvet rather than sruga.
Now, of course, almost all the kids in the new school wear velvet, and it's really a non-issue. If it's comfortable, they're happy with it, and they'll wear it (so it doesn't get lost!) then I'd go for whatever they choose. They can make the ideological choice when they are old enough to understand what it means!

there are velcro things you can put on the inside that makes a big difference.

The last velvet kippot I bought the boys came with little "buttonholes" inside the lining for putting hidden clips. But, if his hair is really short, I guess it won't help any. I did find that it was near-impossible to get a good secure fit with a regular snap-clip over the whole kippa because it was so bulky.

LOL I was looking at one online and he said, "I like my kippa with my name and the stars mommy" (his velvet kippot either have his name embroidered or the other one is painted with colorful stars). So I guess that's that....

you can buy the velvet ones a size larger so they mold the head better. My 4 year old insists on wearing his kippah on the back of his head (over the round bulge, I seriously have no clue as to how they stat on!) If you see him from the front it looks like he's not wearing a kippah at all!

That's what I was going to suggest. (Great minds... ;) ) Ds#2 wore his yarmulka the same way for a very long time. I find that if it's a bit big, it stays on better. Which reminds me....I have to buy ds#2 a bigger yarmulka. His size 6 is getting too small. (Ds#1 wears a size 3. Smaller head.)

There are different kippa shapes depending on where you buy but most kids kippa with a band are a good stay on type. Yes, a larger size works much better. The way it is ajways written at our schools is large black kippa with band. Only black because I have teenagers. That is omitted in lower grades, The band also helps the kippa keep its shape better. I taught my kids very early the proper size and placement of the kippa as what must be, not style. Only 2 of them therefore ever did anything unusual (and dd who wore a kippa for 6 mos when she was about 13 mos).
