Try them on. There isn't so much a "right" size as what is comfortable and fits well to the head.

I was told the kippa should cover the entire place where the hair swirls. Not sit on the head like a plate, be on the forehead or stuck to the back of the head.

I would encourage this at an age when mitzvot are fun and kids trusting so that it would be pretty ingrained on teenagers who may have issues. What is what and what is school rules I didn't go into. It is a fact of life that what kippa one wears will affect what basket one is placed in. It also sends a message to the kid. Yeshivot usually have a dress code and if the kid gets everything is ok and why are they trying to make life difficult at a rebellious age you will have tzoris. The best thing chinuch wise is to be consistent with what kids wear in the families who are going the same direction as you and will be continuing to the type of yeshiva you want.

That's hoping the boy will wear the yarmulka you want him to wear and not decide on his own what he puts on his head.

tev has a smaller head. Technically he can wear a size three black velvet but it comes off way to easy so we get him a size 4. I don't know if the sizing is different though for other kinds.

I find that the size my boys take depends on the kippah - some velvet ones are 4-piece, some are 6, the ones with the rim fit differently to the ones without, and even within the same basic "style" different companies are different shapes - more bowl-shaped, or flatter. Also, some are sold with a size in cm or inches, as well as the standard number size. If I could figure out if that number was outer circumference or across the top from one edge to the other, it might help you choose. In general, I buy them slightly bigger instead of smaller (especially useful when they end up accidentally going through the wash inside a shirt!), as long as it isn't so wide around the circumference that there is a gap between the edge of the kippa and the head.

Nik:

Lots of boys in our shul wear the frik kippot you are talking about. I bought some for DS but he won't wear them. He loves his "softer" kippahs, the velvet ones. It is a source of consternation for my DH, who wears kippah sruga. I tell DH that when he is older DS will wear what the other kids like him wear. The frik kippot do fit very nicely. Some of the boys also wear the bukharian kippot because they don't fall off their heads.

rikal, my children have two swirls on their heads, some of them have a swirl on each side of the head, It would be nearly impossible for us to cover those...

All of my second group (w/dh) have 2 swirls as does the older one with the largest head. The kippa covers. DH has also a swirl on the nape of the neck and that is not considered by common sense.

It doesn't on my kids, and they have size 5 and six kippahs which are bigger then many adults.

yup, 2. My younger boys and nephew have 2 swirls and huge heads. They wear 5-6 in gan. I have a ds with a 9 but he's 20. I doubt that this rule is cast in stone and is probably someone's guide.
