I normally stay out of the basement bathroom and the 2 ppl (not to mention any names of course) who use it regularly are ages 5 and 6 and let's just say they don't like the loud flushing sound and therefore avoid flushing. Today I went in and that was a big mistake as I may as well have gone to the farm... They just don't want to flush - any tips?

I'd go with an instant reward system for every flush you hear... OR.. make them clean up the toilet. That only has to happen once and then they'll flush! Another idea, have music in the bathroom, so they flush won't be heard.

depends on the kids- do rewards work better than punishment? if so- go with a reward system.

for us- i dont reward behavior that is required (such as flushing)- to me im not going to give them a treat for doing something that is required.

does reminding them after they go to the bathroom (if you know they went) help?

realeez, if it makes you feel better my boys are no better. I do a lot of reminding and dh must clean the bathroom. Its his job! They tell me the sound scares them. Our ped just suggested reminding them and eventually they will latch on.

My son has his days..sometimes he remembers sometimes not..

he sometimes tries to get out of it, on yom tov and shabbos by asking: "mommy are we allowed to flush the toilet today cuz its shabbo/yomtov?"

Ideally.. I wouldn't reward for behavior they should do, but if they get a reward for 21 days (studies show this is the amount of time it takes to learn or undo a habit) then you can stop the reward.

I give a reward for potty training, chocolate chips.. I give 1 for #1 and 2 for #2. I don't care how many bags of chocolate chips I go through.. it's worth it to me in the end. I say that if flushing is worth it, reward until the behavior sticks.

Explain to them why we flush - what do they dislike most stinky smells and germs, or flushing noises? With my kids, explaining seems to work most of the time. That or you could tell them if they dont look after the toilet they arent allowed to use it :)

I agree, I dont reward for appropriate behaviour, aside from verbal praise particularly in the early days of establishing a habit as Barbie mentioned, to help establish it.
