Doesn't she do the cooking column in the Toronto Star? My mom could never get over how many ways Ms. Stern could treif up Shabbat dinner.

She does not make any attempt to claim the book is kosher...I would classify it as kosher style, and traditional with a few twists. I am about half way through and I have not seen any obvious "traif" ingredients.

I never follow any cookbood recipe exactly anyway due to all the dietary restrictions in this family, but I look for ideas and combinations I might not have thought of.

So far the recipes I have marked as ones to try (in my own way include:
Grilled Pita with Za'atar
Butternut Squash ribbons
Grilled chicken skewers with Rosemary and Garlic
Porcini rubbed grilled veal chops
Roasted Butternut Polenta
Sweet Potato Mash with Vanilla and Chipotles
Couscous with lemon, dates and almonds
etc.

Eileen

P.S. I haven't found any crab cakes yet! ;)

LOL.

I have an older cookbook of hers, Simply Heartsmart.

She doesn't keep kosher, and makes no claims to providing kosher recipes. She does provide "traditional Jewish" recipes from time to time.

I saw this Friday night dinner book in the bookstores. It looks like an interesting attempt to bring the Shabbat dinner idea to a general audience.

Could you use fake crab for the crabcakes? Dh won't touch the stuff or let me serve it on Shabbat, but he does concede that it has a hechsher and is therefore fine to have in the fridge for my own dining pleasure. Seafood is what I missed the most when I went kosher.
