i always stock up on cereal and my husband's family's minhag is that we can't have any mezonos in our house on pesach.

which cereals do i need to finish and which are ok?

i think cornflakes are ok?- because they are haadama

what about special k

and resse's puffs peanut butter cereal?

my kids are asking for hot cereal and i am telling them we finished the box and it is too close to pesach we have to use up what we have. what a hard minhag- i did not grow up that way.

We hold by selling chametz, so you need to check exactly how careful you need to be, ie only bracha mezonos, or any ingredients that themselves count as chometz. I know some people are careful to get rid of even corn flakes, because they have barley malt in them, and that is chometz. Special K is definitely chometz, as it is made with wheat. IIRC, even Rice Krispies contain chometz. Most cereals are actually chometz, maybe with the exception of plain puffed rice, or other totally gluten-free cereals.
My general plan (not working so well this year) is that some time around Purim I say that we aren't buying any more cereal until we finish all the boxes we have, and then, I buy one box at a time. We eat a lot of cereal, and everyone likes a wide variety (eg, 2 kinds of cereal mixed, or a bowl or oatmeal followed by a bowl of something cold), so I meet a lot of resistance, and remind my dh how much there is to finish before I send him shopping!
I also switch from crackers to rice cakes, pasta to rice, etc in the same way.
hth!
