I was in Walmart today (my first shopping outing in a looooooooong time and I am seriously wiped now) and at one point, I heard a little boy crying Mommy from a distance. It was a little Jewish boy who lost his mother in the store and boy was he crying (I don't blame him). A lady was taking him to the front of the store on the little bike he was sitting on to page his mother. I still heard him wailing for a good few more minutes. Then, as we were leaving, I saw the little boy with his mother and he was the only kid with her. I honestly thought it was a mother who had a bunch of kids with her, one walked off, and it took her a few minutes to realize since she had a few others also and then quickly looked for him. How does a mother who has one kid on her take so long to realize her kid is missing and actually find him? Pesach food and cleaning stuff are important to buy, but not over our kids safety! |

Maybe he wandered off looking at something while her attention was elsewhere for a split second. Maybe she was in a panic looking all over for him. Wal-Mart is a big place. It's easy to judge when one doesn't know the entire situation. Anyone whois a parent or has babysat knows that one can't be attentive 100% of the time. |

One reason why we are NOT all going into NY today. Dh took Zu and Zu only. I gave Zu a check list with pictures of everything we need to keep his attention. Kind of like a scavenger hunt. Anything to make dh's job easier. I do agree though, we don't know what happened. Zu once ran off and he is FAST. Dh went after him and he was just to fast. We found him 5 mins later but never once we were not aware of the situation. He was freaked and realized his little plan of running fast and than hiding well was not so brilliant!! |

I'm sure there could have been perfectly good reasons and I don't normally like to judge but I have heard of too many pre-Pesach tragedies that could have been averted had the parents been paying attention properly. Yes, Walmart is a big store but I am sure each department head can be paged to keep an eye out. I really felt bad for that poor kid even seeing him with his Mommy and his tear-stained face :( |

For sure its a good reminder!!! This time of year your mind goes nuts. Its so easy even when you are 100% on for there to be HV"S an issue. Thanks about Zu's list :) I got the idea right before shabbos when I got a catalog with a bunch of things I wanted dh to pick up from eichlers and realized if he didn't have an actual picture he prob. would not figure out half the things on my list! Than I thought motzei Shabbos- Zu would love this. A scavenger hunt for all my stuff! He can't wait to check everything off so he can check off the last thing on his list- his well deserved burger!!! |

That is a great idea. I do that (not as formally as a written checklist) but I do that when we go anywhere. Let's find the.... and the kids love it. Things happen. I don't let Ari walk around a store. He goes in a wagon. If I can stick Hallie in a wagon too (Costco in front, other places in back) I do it. Kids run. Kids hide. Even a parent who has her eyes open can miss something if looking for something else. It's sad but true. Thank G-d the kid was safe and nothing happened. |
