I mentioned my family's preference for natural, healthy foods in a reply to a query on my MOTW post. The following are my four favorite cookbooks.
Secrets of a Jewish Baker by George Greenstein, The Crossing Press ISBN 0-89594-605-X (It doesn't specifically have a hechser, but all of the recipes are kosher. Some are dairy. A few involve meat. He includes recipes from all over the world, and from all cultures, but the Jewish favorites are all there. It was a present from my mother, sent with another cookbook that I'd requested from the Moosewood series. I like the Moosewood cookbooks, but they're not practical for me right now.)
Basic Macrobiotic Cooking by Julia Ferre, George Osawa Macrobiotic Foundation (GOMF Press) ISBN 0-918860-47-4 (Obviously no hechser, but it's almost totally vegan and I've looking through the cookbook fairly thoroughly and haven't found anything not kosher. This one was a gift from one of my sisters when I began to dabble in macrobiotics in high school.)
The Do of Cooking by Cornelia Aihara GOMF Press (I've lost the cover so I don't have the ISBN. I'm sure there's a new edition out by now anyway. This one I bought in high school. It does contain a few recipes that are not kosher. The seafood can be replaced with fish. She does have a recipe for Japanese style Gefilte Fish.)
The "I Can't Believe This Has No Sugar" Cookbook, by Deborah E. Buhr ISBN 0-312-15551-4 (In my experience the cookbook lives up to its name. It was written specifically for members of her family who developed allergies and sensitivities to various foods. It includes calorie, fat, protein etc. counts and diabetic information. No hechser - obviously - but the only non-kosher ingredient that I noticed was a certain shortening for which she gives a kosher option. It's not mentioned very often. This one was a gift from the same sister, about 11 years after the first one.)
Enjoy and to your health!
