What is the going rate for losing teeth? My DS lost his first tooth this afternoon so we told him that the tooth fairy will pay him a visit tonight :-)

Mazal tov!
Well, my kids told us 1 dollar (seemed like a lot to me!). Years back, my parents gave us 20p, and my grandparents 50p, so I'm guessing 1 pound would be about what his friends are getting. But, can you call the parents of one or two classmates to ask. I found that it was very important to my kids to get about what their friends did.

My son lost his first tooth this past week, He gets $1 a tooth, but the tooth fairy only comes on sunday's and Monday's as it lives far away. Also the tooth must be left under the pillow

I got a quarter. But that was 18 years ago.

I gave $1 for the first tooth and 25 cents thereafter.

That being said, I don't think it matters what everyone else gets. Give what feels appropriate to you. My oldest only shops at yard sales (I buy everything else), so a quarter goes a long way. If you live a different lifestyle, 25 cents might be meaningless to your child.

Here, a dollar gets you a trip to the dollar store (they weren't old enough to figure the tax on top!), so it was a logical amt.
Is there anyone you know well enough from the class that you can call them?
Or, just be prepared that this will be the lesson in "we all get what we need, which isn't necessarily the same as everyone else" - we do this with hand-me-down clothes (which dd gets, ds1 doesn't so he gets new, and ds2 gets sometimes) and computer games, and countless other things!

mazzal tov! ds1 lost tooth #1 and #2 within one week, just 3 weeks ago. he's very young, 5 years and 2 months, so no classmates to compete with:)
i didn't give money, i left small gifts under his pillow (colour book, stickers, new crayons, a fancy pen - on 2 different nights of course) - he was very happy!

i did tell him that the fairy comes only for the first 2:)

I'm not planning on telling my kids about the tooth fairy at all. Think I can get away with it? (If you want to get off "cheap", promise him 5 shekel for your trip. It'll buy him 2 bags of Bamba and he'll be in heaven.)

My daughter is 6.5 and hasn't lost one yet.. but I'll give her $1 per tooth. I got that much back almost 30 years ago, so I figure I can't give her less.
There is no Tooth Fairy. Mommy will give her $1.

My parents tried giving me a dollar. However my cousin got 50 cents and I was jealous she got TWO things and I only got one. My parents happily traded in my dollar for two quarters. I SO didn't get money back than.

Smart
My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he don't know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head--
Too proud of me to speak!
