Aargh! I think we'll have to do a lot of short-order cooking that week. They should all get fed in camp for lunch (so pizza and mac-n-cheese are out for supper). Two of us can't do any dairy, one can't do any soy and another avoids it. That means that one kid will be eating jam sandwiches at camp for lunch every day (and yes, I can send something more nutritious, but then there are funny comments from the other boys, so I'll have to think about what I can send that won't attract too much attention) Not everyone eats fish sticks or fish patties. We'll eat eggs quite a bit, I'm guessing - Spanish omelette, matza brei, whole-grain pancakes. A few meals will be salads with mix-n-match toppings - beans, cheese, boiled eggs, canned tuna/salmon. I'll probably do rice and lentils a couple of times, too. I can't really plan too precisely till I get a menu from camp, to try to balance things a little (how do you balance out freezies?!) |

I have a couple of pizza crusts in the freezer prepped. All they need is sauce and toppings. I also have a number of trays of mac and cheese. All pareve. Thank G-d we have soy. We are doing bf for dinner one night and I have PLENTY of pancakes still in the freezer both choc. chip and plain cinn. They all can have the gimmie lean "sausage" so I will use that as "sausage" links with the pancakes. I have a pareve lasagna with tofu, gimmie lean, and loads of veggies in the freezer which will go with salad and garlic bread. If I am up to it one night I will do tofu nuggets and fries. The kids love those but I need to be up for it. Zusil is into fish sticks right now so he will have for lunch and I will get cottage cheese for Tev cause he loves the stuff. Also yogurts for both boys. Frei is ana to dairy so she won't get and instead will feast on leftovers. For dh and myself I will cook fish one night and see what happens with Mo. If he seems okay I will do fish again for us another night. So far he looks great with sunbutter and I will be plenty happy to eat it for lunches. Oh, and one night I will do jumbalaya with just the fake sausage. The kids loved it with the turkey and lamb so hopefully they will love the pareve version. Another night will be noddles and "meat balls"- again fake meat. Dh has requested noddles with white sauce and salmon. If I have the energy I will :) |

I usually only have meat 1-2 times per week for dinner so I am not too worried. Fish, eggs, quiche, lasagne, pizza etc should not be a problem for 5 suppers. |

A friendly reminder that if there are food allergies or other medically-indicated diet restrictions, you should ask your Rav what to do. I've been given hetterim for poultry during at least part of the 9 days when I was very restricted during nursing, and it wasn't even a question when ds1 was younger and restricted (depends on the kid, the situation, and the age, but IIRC, under age 7 is more lenient for all kids). I know this is an area where there are many differences in minhagim and how strongly they are held (ie how lenient one can be). For those just starting to deal with this (either because of a new medical situation, or because you are just learning the halachos) it's really a good idea to run things past your Rav for direction. |

last year i didn't get a heter for poultry and I was pregnant, off milk and fish due to allergies and carbs cuz of dr's orders. I'm going to try to get a heter again this year cuz I was always hungry last year but if I don't get it I'm planning on vegie stir fry, sesame noodles, baked rice, parve eggplant parmigan, lo mein and salads. |

Did the rav know the WHOLE situation? That sounds nuts- sorry. I know when I was on the TED with Frei and had 8 solids and that was it, lamb was my one and only protein. The rav was like, how is their even a question- you need protein to survive! |

bnm - sorry you had such a hard time. Definitely different from what I had to do when nursing. Can you eat nuts? If so, they might help to boost your protein and fill you up some. Also, lots of slow-to-digest foods like veggies. Are you still off carbs? If not, I found barley to be really filling. I'm resigned to eating lots of eggs over the 9 days, although I have to go kind-of easy, because I don't digest them so well, and will need to balance them with lots of fibre! I might try to eat very small amounts of soy, too, watching for stomach issues so I can stop if it starts to bother me and recover quickly. It's a hard balance to strike between having sufficient nutrition leading up to Tisha B'Av, and creating more difficulty fasting because I ate things that aren't the best for me. I was pretty wiped out this last week, which we are assuming is because I had a hard time fasting on Shiva Assar beTamuz (broke my fast as soon as a I realized I was having a hard time, and didn't really recover till the next day). So, I need to build myself up, but with limited protein options (I can eat fish, eggs and beans/lentils). It takes planning, but it's definitely workable - much more so than previous years. DS has agreed to take egg salad and tuna-mayo to camp in a little thermos, so he can have something more filling than jam sandwiches (and I hope he'll come home a happier camper for having had a more balanced lunch). Will make sure he has alternative snacks that are as appealing as the cookies he can't eat, too, because when they aren't sure about whether the snack is safe, they give him a freezie, which he likes, and I'm glad that they give him a treat so he doesn't feel bad, but then he gets home on the down-side of a sugar rush, and I have to deal with the consequences! |

My baby will be having chicken, and meat as usual. He cannot have dairy, eggs, or soy, and he cannot survive on oatmeal and breast milk. He is under a year, so its fine either way. 3 year old cannot have dairy, or eggs, but can have regular pasta, soy and fish, so he'll be fine. My baby does not react to soy or dairy when I eat it, but I try to moderate both. he also cannot have corn, bananas, chocolate, nuts, (seeds, not 100% sure, but not going there) peanuts, eggs, dairy, soy. (seems to be OK with lecithin, soy oil, and corn syrup though, again we try to avoid those too even though he does not react to them) We were suppossed to do Dairy testing last week, but he had bronchitis and was running fever, so I had to cancel the morning of. |

UTMJ, I had a heter for eating poultry when I was nursing a baby who did not tolerate many foods. I did find that my Rav seemed glad that I would call each year to confirm the psak from a previous year, so I don't think it would be wrong to call and ask another shaila, especially if your baby needs more calories from you than last year. ITA that it is absolutely not an issue what your baby eats, but I was also under the impression that a 3yo could eat what they need without restrictions (even healthy) because they don't understand enough of the reasons for no meat. I do hope that you can find a workable solution to all this! And I hope I haven't offended. I just remember how much I worried over it myself, when I was in your situation! It was such a relief when I got the hetter! Davening for you to have siyata dishmaya in this! |

yeah, when we went to denver one of the big reasons why the docs pushed the soy challenge for Frei was for the 9 days. No eggs, dairy, or fish, and most legums are out as well so since her soy numbers weren't so high they challenged it and thank G-d we got it!!! We also have white beans so I will be cooking with those a bunch as well. I have not had dairy or fish yet with the baby just by chance, not on purpose. I guess technically I have had medical grade dairy from my meds so I might try dairy... just nervous nervous since so far we have no signs of issues. My milk though is contaminated with fish still cause I had fish as my last meal before he was born so when the middle two are sleeping I will make fish for dh and myself. He seems to be fine so far with me eating egg stuff- but I have not had straight eggs and won't any time soon cause I can't cook them in the house. I had mayo though and everything has stayed the same B"H! Just kind of nervous and waiting for the shoe to drop. |
