I finally decided. I am going to put up a veg. chili in the crock pot. It is easy, jam packed with good stuff, and not to filling but filling enough. With it I will serve it over spaghetti and topped with toffuti sour cream and fried onions (for dh). For afterward I will reheat this because I will not be up to cooking. We will all break our fast on birthday cake. We have the tradition to bake Tev's cake all together in the afternoon.
can you please post the recipe for the crock pot chili?

Dont think I will be fasting, DH doesnt want me to, and is asking our Rabbi about it tonight. I am still not over my little run-in with swine flu and am on Drs orders to eat and drink and eat and drink and eat and drink and drink some more... will be odd not to fast. So, I dont think that I'll be making anything too interesting pre-fast, but I do hope to make something nicer post-fast.

Mummy - take it easy. If the doc prescribed good food and plenty of fluids then that is really relevant halachically.

So, dh asked for salmon, but it's not on sale, so I bought a small half-salmon fillet, and two packs of frozen pollock, and I'll make it with potatoes, pasta and veggies. DH reminded me that he really doesn't like to eat after the fast - he drinks, and then much later he'll eat something like a bowl of cereal, yet every year, twice a year, I forget and make lots of food for breaking our fasts, and wonder why he won't eat it! So, this year I'm not preparing anything special for after the fast.
If I get to the end of the fast, I'll probably also do something really easy to digest like cereal or crackers, and lots to drink, and wait till the morning to eat properly
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out what to prepare ahead for the kids to eat. They are old enough to take their own snacks, and dd and ds1 can make sandwiches from fillings, so I'll probably make up egg-salad and tuna salad and salad veg sticks for their lunches, and save some pasta and beans for their supper. It's a lot easier now that dd is old enough to serve up and I don't have to do individual portions like packed lunches! Wish I could think of something more inspiring for supper for the kids, though.

Well my Rabbi says no fast for me so I guess thats that. Feels very weird though. For my kids, we'll do sandwiches for lunch, cereal for breakfast and probably some sort of pasta and veges for dinner. Otherwise, it'll be beans and cheese toasties.

Yeah, it does feel weird to eat. FWIW, the times I had to eat on Tisha B'Av it still felt like Tisha B'Av, and I did not eat "normally" ie I ate what I needed to, but only plain, simple foods and that kept me in the spirit of the day.
The most important thing is that you should have a refuah shleimah!

Well, shul schedule is arranged so that dh can be home to feed the kids, but I think I still will have everything cooked today, for them to eat cold. This way, I don't have to worry about serving up individual portions, but dh doesn't have to cook if he doesn't feel good.
